Guest guest
Abandoned 8-month-old dog in need of immediate leg surgery Martinez, CA—Dutch, an abandoned 8-month-old Pit Bull/Chow/Lab mix, is in need of urgent veterinary care to repair his broken leg, which he sustained in a hit-and-run car accident. Dutch was found on the streets of Sacramento, CA on January 14, 2004. A San Francisco Bay Area resident discovered Dutch sitting in the middle of a busy street licking food off the pavement. Dutch was wary of direct contact with humans and could not be caught after countless attempts. However, a passerby knew the woman who abandoned the dog. The passerby agreed to notify the woman that the Bay Area resident would find a home for Dutch if the woman could catch the dog. On the evening of January 14, the woman contacted the Bay Area resident and agreed to keep Dutch inside until arrangements were made to pick up the dog a few days later. The woman could not afford to care for Dutch. So, she made the decision to release Dutch, who was abused when he was puppy, to the streets. The woman hoped that someone would just pick him up. However, the woman did not uphold her promise to keep Dutch safe inside. On January 15, Dutch was hit by a car. It appeared his leg was broken. The woman contacted the Bay Area resident at 10 PM that night. She said that she needed ‘to get rid of the dog right away’. The Bay Area resident told the woman she would drive up to Sacramento immediately to pick-up Dutch. Arriving after midnight at the woman’s apartment, the Bay Area resident found Dutch curled up in a corner in pain. Within minutes, Dutch was in the car in-route to an emergency vet center back in the Bay Area. Dutch reached the vet center around 2:00 AM. Thereafter, the vet confirmed that Dutch suffered a severe lower leg injury, which would require surgery for the leg to properly heal. The emergency vet released Dutch in the evening of January 16. Dutch was fitted with a splint for temporary relief. Emergency vet costs totaled $1,200, which were paid by the Bay Area resident. On January 20, Dutch met with Dr. Enke at the Martinez Animal Hospital. The doctor confirmed that, in order for Dutch’s leg to successfully heal, surgery needed to be performed. Dr. Enke said that there is great possibility that Dutch's leg bone would not fuse together again without surgery within a week or two. Unfortunately, the Bay Area resident does not have the money to fund his $2,000 leg surgery. Tentatively, Dutch’s surgery is scheduled early in the week of January 26. Unfortunately, Dutch’s surgery will be cancelled if the money cannot be raised. Dutch is compassionately calling for help to fund his much-needed surgery. Contributions for Dutch’s urgent vet care can be made payable to the Martinez Animal Hospital (Attn: The Dutch Fund) and sent to: Martinez Animal Hospital Attn: The Dutch Fund 5055 Alhambra Ave. Martinez, CA 94553 For more information about Dutch’s plight and adoption status, please contact (925) 487-4419.
