Guest guest
Hello everyone, I just found out that the First Unitarian Church of Oakland, in which I founded the Oakland chapter of Unitarian Universalists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, was to have the children from grades K-2 sell soup packs on Sunday to raise money to buy an animal from Heifer International. I was rather flabbergasted and at this point have persuaded them to postpone it, which they have done - pending conversation and deeper understanding. I am looking for some ideas that some of you may know of of organizations that support/organize projects that help people find viable, sustainable ways to make a living without exploiting animals. For instance, Trees for Life provides seedlings for people to plant trees that bear fruit. I know there are many, many similar organizations, but I need some help finding them. Also, there tend to be arguments that people in Northern climates simply need to use animals because of the weather conditions. It is that argument I need to be prepared to respond to and offer alternatives for. Thank you for whatever information you can provide. I am looking for the name of organizations that enable to live independently (those that train people in computers, teach them to sew and sell clothing, etc.) Many thanks, Colleen --------------------- Colleen Patrick-Goudreau Senior Content & Creative Director JustGive.org phone (510) 238-5004 fax (510) 238-4809 colleen http://www.justgive.org --------------------- Watch " Meet Your Meat " narrated by Alec Baldwin http://www.meetyourmeat.com " All beings tremble before violence. Guest guest
Colleen, Have you heard about the Grameen Bank? They give microloans to individuals looking to start small business ventures, both here in the states and abroad. http://www.grameen-info.org/ http://www.gfusa.org/ Granted, you can't ensure that these programs aren't going towards non-vegetarian ventures, but it's probably way better from an AR standpoint than Heifer.
