Dear Animal Companions, Advocates, Vigilers, Lovers & Liberators:

The year ended not with a bang, but a peaceful candlelight vigil for the animals

at UCSF. The vigil (on Thursday, 12/30/03) was attended by at least 7 dogs (and

1 toy lamb) and over a dozen humans leafleting/protesting, with about 10 candles

lit at one point. The UC police were in attendance, too, protecting the

university from possible fire from the candles and us animal rights folks from

storming the building (I'm joking, of course). However, a university policeman

did request that I remove my two candles (in jars) from a small ledge that lined

the university building - saying, in effect, that it was a fire hazard to the

building. I have yet to see concrete and rather damp soil (from the rains)

combine with a candle flame to bring about fire - but miracles do happen, I hear

(smile!). Anyway, thank you to all who attended - dogs and humans alike - it

was a truly unique and heartwarming experience. And I am sure we will do it

again soon.

Furthermore, I would like to extend my thanks to all who have attended the

vigil-protests at UCSF during this past year. I will go out on a limb by saying

that they were a great success, in that we maintained a monthly presence

(sometimes twice monthly) in protest of UCSF's exploitation and abuse of animals

in a variety of research projects. We shall continue our protest into the new

year - with the next Vigil-Protest at UCSF on January 22, Thursday, 11:30 AM

(till about 1 PM). Hope you can make it!

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TO UCSF: UCSF is located at 513 Parnassus Avenue in San

Francisco, easily reached by the N Judah streetcar (get off at Arguello, and

then walk up the hill to Parnassus) or the the 6-Parnassus bus or 43-Masonic

bus, both of which stop in front of UCSF on Parnassus Avenue.

And last but not least, the next meeting of the San Francisco Commision on

Animal Control & Welfare will be January 8, Thursday, at City Hall (in Civic

Center), Room 408, 5:30 pm. Hope you can attend as we spread the word about the

unethical and unnecessary experiments on dogs and other animals at UCSF.

May this next year see some significant change for the better for all beings,

human and otherwise, in this world!

Sincerely,

Bob O'Brien

(for the Vigil)
