Guest guest
hello all again! thank you for all the beautiful, helpful responses thus far! All of your ideas are amazing and i love them! I'll tell you some of my ideas, which you've pretty much captured with what you'd like to see in a place, but i'll let you in on my vision thus far... -cozy/comfortable, homey atmosphere (not modern and sterile-eek!) -wholesome/nutritious and fresh, no " fake meat " or highly processed ingredients (i'm talkin an organic vegan house ya'll!!) -BREAKFAST! (which i'm dying to do!), with longer hours and lots of fun options (waffles, pancakes, wheat free options, house made preserves and bakery fresh each day, house tofu " cream cheeze " & bagels.....) -lots of dessert options, freshly house made -hours that will extend into late night -possibly vegan beer & wine in time (we'll see if it heads in that direction) I just really want this to be a place where people can meet, and enjoy great food that is on the whole revolutionary for their bodies and for the world. A place for community, peace of mind, and nurturing of the body, and also a place to learn. In time I would love to have cooking classes hosted there, and also to open up the floor to local talents, perhaps spoken word night, or acoustic guitar, local artists can display art. Another major theme is that the business will be green, focusing on the environment as a daily practice. stress people to bring to go containers and mugs whenever possible, and offer discounts to those who do, use pollutant free soaps and cleaners, build sustainably and use recycled products. There are so many wonderful things, the sky is the limit!! these are just a few of my ideas. I'm very excited to pour my heart and soul into this endeavor, and i'm glad to know there are people out there like you who will support me! I'm at square one starting off with this and the whole business running world, so any help is appreciated. Please keep your feedback coming, as i love to hear from you all! thank you again, beautiful day!
Guest guest
Greetings, Thanks for this fascinating and important thread! Many are the times I've exclaimed, " I wish we had an Herbivore-type restaurant " in Berkeley. I concur with the other posters who've pointed out that Berkeley's present veg offerings tilt towards the fast food, greasy, non-McDougall side of the veg spectrum. Like some of the other posters have noted, Michael's veg diner was subpar on service, food quality, and price. I also think its location in south Berkeley might not have been the best. Somewhere in central or north-central Berkeley, like Cha-ya, might work out better. I really like what you say below about making the restaurant not only a place where one can obtain quality, not heavily processed vegan food at reasonable prices, but also the piece about fostering community. I agree with what the other commentators on this thread have articulated about wholesome, delicious food, adequate room between tables, etc. But I also think the community angle is important. I look at Elephant Pharmacy in Berkeley as a model of this type of business - they routinely host free classes and meetings covering alternative health and related topics. The best model of this that I've seen in a restaurant is a place called Casa De Luz in Austin. When I lived in Austin, Casa De Luz was *the* place to go to meet people for a leisurely weekend brunch. It served macrobiotic vegan food. The decor was all natural wood with long, communal tables in addition to more intimate tables for two. On different nights there would be different themes of food (e.g., Mexican). It drew a regular crowd of folks who not only appreciated natural foods, but also a place to meet like-minded folks and converse over good, healthy, food in a decidedly non-fast food atmosphere. Best of luck with your endeavor. Let us know when it comes to fruition. Certainly, my family I would love to try such an option. With best wishes, Tor Neilands --- moogalactic <moogalactic wrote: > hello all again! > thank you for all the beautiful, helpful responses > thus far!
