Hi All-

Since I sent this message to the Chron on Monday, and it hasn't been printed, I

wanted to send it to y'all as witnesses!

taking a life to give thanks?

After visiting and feeding turkeys on a farm recently, it seems unthinkable that

for so many in this country, giving thanks includes taking a life . I found it

gut-wrenching that you would run an article not only encouraging but glamorizing

the random killing (hunting) of beautiful wild turkeys for selfish enjoyment by

a few human beings.

Isn't it enough that we have heard time after time that eating meat isn't

healthy for us? What about the moral considerations? It would seem that

killing or otherwise being responsible for the death of an animal cancels out

any thanks given.

There are so many resources available for cooking a meal without meat. Recipes,

cooking classes, you name it, it's on the web, in magazines, and bookstores. So

why not try it?

Imagine trying it on Thanksgiving for a change. Imagine being responsible for

SPARING a life by NOT buying, hunting or otherwise being responsible for the

death of an animal this Thanksgiving. You and family and friends can enjoy each

others' company just as well without eating a dead animal. Gravy, potatoes,

stuffing, green bean casserole, and even imitation meat are all locally, easily

available.

And, rather than contribute to the killing of 45 million birds at Thanksgiving

time, the Chronicle can promote a meat-free Thanksgiving holiday. Rather than

run an article about the barbaric practice of hunting, as if our lives depended

on it, the Chronicle can run articles on spending Thanksgiving the meat-free

way, complete with recipes, nutritional information, classes, and encouragement.

The Chronicle can run a vegetarian Thanksgiving or Christmas cooking " training

camp " !

I would find this a more balanced approach. After all, many Chronicle readers

are vegetarians, and all we ever hear about in the Chronicle for Thanksgiving is

about dead animals. Please consider giving vegetarians and vegans equal time

during the traditional meat-eating holidays. (And the rest of the year, while

your at it)
