Box 4398 Davis, CA 95617 530/759-8482 - info PLEASE FEEL FREE TO FORWARD Viva!USA Alerts 11/24/03 1. Update on Viva!USA 2. Register Holiday Events for pigs =================== 1. Update on Viva!USA =================== Viva!USA started in September of 2000. We have conducted investigations of factory farms, written well-researched reports on some of these industries, and sent out hundreds of videos and thousands of leaflets of our findings to help others spread the word. We have also sent out our educational guides that focuses on the animals, the environment, and health. We have created campaign materials specific for students, run ads in high school newspapers encouraging teens to explore vegetarianism, and developed a special packet and website geared towards students. Our guide, Vegan Basics, was reviewed in major newspapers across the USA. Viva!USA has achieved victories with our campaign-based approach of spreading vegetarianism/veganism. We have been able to convince grocery stores to stop carrying duck meat raised from inhumane farms. And as many of you know, the offshoot to our campaign against Whole Foods has caused them to initiate creating new standards for farmed animals: " We don't want incremental change that leaves the industrial factory-farming model still operational within our company. " We are very excited to also have played a role in getting the CEO of Whole Foods, John Mackey, to go vegan. We played a major role in preventing a mega dairy from moving to a nearby (CA) community. Since then, we have continued our efforts while creating awareness of the suffering of the cows and the environmental impacts of this industry. Despite all our successes, Viva!USA's largest supporter, Viva! in England, is no longer going to be able to sustain us at the level they have been. Because of this, Viva!USA needs to count on our members in the USA to help sustain us for the future. We are a registered non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible. Due to this cut back, Viva!USA is going to be making some changes. We will be keeping you alerted to these on-line. We ask you to please give generously to Viva!USA and know that every penny you put into our organization is used almost immediately for our campaigning and outreach efforts. We are counting on your help. Thank you! Please use this link to find out how you can donate to Viva!USA: http://www.vivausa.org/donate/index.html ====================== 2. Holiday Events for Pigs ====================== As many of your know, every Christmas & Easter Viva! asks people to go out and leaflet on behalf of the pigs. We cover grocery stores and Honeybaked Ham locations throughout the country. (For Honeybaked Ham locations go to: http://www.honeybaked.com/). At these events we have succeeded in getting customers to turn around and not buy the ham. We have reached young kids who love pigs as well as many people young and old who have considered vegetarianism. This year, we want to do the same. However, due to the cutbacks, this is the first year Viva!USA is going to have to request a donation to help cover postage and printing costs. If you would like to participate, please e-mail us with your name, address, and contact information that we can give out to others who are interested in participating, and please confirm that you can send a $5 donation to help cover costs. We will send you 100 of our When Pigs Cry leaflets (if you would prefer a different leaflet, please specify; see http://www.vivausa.org/activistresources/leaflets/index.html for our leaflets), 1 pig poster, and a copy of Vegan Basics. E-mail this information to whenpigscry. Deadline to orders materials at $5 is December 7. If you cannot afford the $5 we will try to work something out. Please use this opportunity to speak out for the millions of pigs who are killed at 6 months old and whose mothers are kept in crates so small they cannot walk or even turnaround. They live in factory farms where disease runs rampant and they are treated as mere objects, tossed in the middle of isles when they are sick to die without food, water, or comfort. Please speak out for these wonderful, sensitive, and intelligent animals.
