I received an email from PETA looking for someone to organize a demo at

a PETCO that is opening in Mountain View this weekend. I can't do it.

Can anybody on this list? This topic is not exactly related to

vegetarianism, but there are a lot of people compassionate to animals on

this list, so I thought I'd ask. (Sorry, Tammy!)

The email is pasted below. Please reply to ChristyG - not to

me. Thanks!

As you may know, PETA has kicked off a campaign to persuade PETCO to

stop selling animals. The hundreds of complaints of neglect and cruelty

that have poured into our office for nearly a decade from all across the

country have made it very clear that PETCO cannot be trusted to care for

animals in its stores. Animals sold at PETCO have been consistently

deprived of the bare minimums, including adequate food, water,

veterinary care, and even a painless death.

According to Dennis Herrera, the city attorney for San Francisco, " PETCO

has proven that it is not capable of caring for the animals it sells in

a humane manner. If they can't treat living things with care and

consideration, they sure shouldn't be in the business of selling pets. "

The city of San Francisco has filed a lawsuit to bar PETCO from selling

animals there. Conditions are so bad at PETCO that lawsuits have also

been filed against the chain in Las Vegas and Utah.

Employees and customers of PETCO have told us that small animals are

often cannibalized by cagemates as a result of stressful, overcrowded

conditions and that unweaned baby birds have starved to death because

poorly trained employees did not know how to hand-feed them. We have

received horrifying reports from PETCO employees across the country that

their managers have ordered them to throw sick and injured animals into

the freezer to die because the cost of their veterinary care outweighed

their monetary value. Details can be found on our Web site

PETCOCruelty.com <http://www.petcocruelty.com/> .

To its credit, PETCO, recognizing the overpopulation crisis with dogs

and cats, has put in place a wonderful program in which it works with

local shelters to place dogs and cats in loving homes. However, the

store continues to peddle birds and other small animals, such as guinea

pigs and rabbits, contributing to the overpopulation of these companion

animals. According to company officials, small animals make up less than

5 percent of the chain's total sales, yet PETCO still seeks to profit

from their misery. PETCO is in business to make money, not for love of

animals.

Won't you please help us with this campaign? A PETCO store is having

grand opening celebrations in your area THIS WEEKEND. Would you be

interested in organizing a leafleting outside of this store on Friday,

Saturday, or Sunday? I will send you posters, leaflets, stickers, and

help you contact other activists in your area. If you are interested,

please e-mail me at ChristyG, or call me at 757-622-7382,

extension 1650 as soon as possible TODAY.

If you're not able to participate, please refuse to shop at PETCO stores

until they stop selling animals. And tell all your friends and neighbors

to do the same. You can also help by writing to:
