vegan travelling

Hi everyone,

I'm not quite sure how we got on the whole Tacobell, junk food, etc. Not

really locally-related? But since we're on that subject, I just want to

make a suggestion.

Some people suggest going to fast food places where you can get vegan

versions of this and that. Not for me.

Other people suggest carrying around those cup-a-soups and dried fruit.

Not for me either.

There is a middle ground for those of us who like to eat GOOD food while

traveling. My husband and I drive across country between CA and NY at

least once a year and somehow we manage to eat really well the whole time.

We do this by doing our research beforehand. We look to see what cities

we'll be going through around mealtimes and then go on some of the many

veggie restuarant/grocery lists to find out where to eat (and how to get

there from the highway.) Not only have we been able to eat hot,

delicious, healthy vegan food in all different states, but we know where

we need to buy extra for those long states with nothing. (Wyoming,

Colorado, etc.) And to top it off, we've discovered some of our favorite

restaurants and co-ops that make their own food that way.

We didn't start out that way. Our first trip, we took a little cooler and

ate a lot of marinated tofu sandwiches, etc. and couldn't find anywhere to

eat, say, in Kansas City at 9 pm on a Sunday. If we'd taken the short

amount of time it takes to do the research, we would have known that

there's two places with great vegan food, where they were, and that we

would have had to hurry to get there because they close at 9.

Obviously if you're flying, it's not quite the same. But for driving its

possible to eat quite well.

If anyone wants any suggestions on where to do along Highway 50 or 70,

e-mail me privately (it's not really relevant to this list) and I'll lt

you know where to go.

Emily
