Rather than condemn such restaurants we should be supporting their goals of delivering inexpensive food efficiently while clamoring for them to make their food healthier and more eco-friendly (i.e. vegan). Mass production is an essential ingredient of our modern standard of living. Otherwise we'd still be living in the dark ages with everything hand made.' DG Hmmm...I couldn't disagree with you more, David! But I already knew that as veg*ans we're a diverse group with many points of view. Just as I choose not to shop at WalMart because of their rabidly anti-union stance, and their below standard wages and poor benefits, I choose not to support corporatations like Taco Bell's parent company and Burger King, et al, that take advantage of workers and make money off of the killing and mistreatment of animals. I want to support businesses whose ethics I am in tune with. A meat-serving restaurant is taking no risk by offering a vegetarian option. An all vegan restaurant is taking a big financial risk by adhering to a set of values around health, ecology, minimizing animal suffering, etc. It is their business I want to support, and even if it means walking, BARTing, or otherwise traveling a little farther to get to a vegan/vegetarian restaurant, I will do so. As far as eating while traveling, I don't find any great need to " pull into a fast food restaurant " either for my own hunger or to satisfy the needs of non-veg travel mates. I can easily find a store that has bananas, apples, bread, peanut butter, hummus, celery, carrots, and on and on. If as a small additional advantage I don't have to worry about contaminated cutting boards, knives, towels, cooking surfaces, e coli, salmonella, and BSE, then all the better.
