Guest guest
IT PASSED! LAUSD Votes to mandate VEGETARIAN OPTIONS at every school!!! We didn't think it was enough to simply replace snickers with granola bars, and either did they.... This is quite amazing considering the whole cafeteria component of the measure was chopped out. Written as a separate tenet, vegetarian options remained in the resolution. As the 2nd largest district in the nation (700 schools), I expect more districts to follow our lead! CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU to everyone for your support Segment from today's Los Angeles Times Article: Sale of Junk Food at School Banned L.A. Unified campuses will be required to offer more healthful treats for students. By Cara Mia DiMassa, Times Staff Writer " The plan also requires that each school meal include at least one vegetarian option. " In addition: " It directs Los Angeles schools Supt. Roy Romer to provide salad bars in all district high schools within two years and all elementary schools within six years. " (Soymilk will be piloted at 5 school sites) The complete LAUSD Obesity Prevention Motion can be viewed at: http://www.nojunkfood.org/policy/lausd_obprevent.html The complete LA TIMES article can be viewed at: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-junk29oct29,1,2398330.story?coll=la-head\ lines-california Jacqueline Domac Chair, Health Department Coordinator, LEAF Grant Venice High School, LAUSD Policy Consultant, CA Center for Public Health Advocacy www.nojunkfood.org
