Guest guest
Dear All, Hi there! Everyone might already know about this but just in case they don't, I just sent this to my Student Animal Legal Defense Fund Chapter -- just got back from the Animal Law Conference in Portland, OR -- which is the reference below. Best, Michele Berrong USF SALDF Founder _____ Please take five minutes to call your state senators to urge them to support this amendment -- as we learned at the Animal Law Conference, calls are VERY effective, so PLEASE PLEASE take two minutes to let them know we want animals too sick to walk to slaughter to be treated humanely!! Because the animals are still technically alive (and can still make the seller a buck), the animals are dragged into the slaugherhouse or loaded onto bulldozers and dumped, often breaking bones, hips, etc. These animals suffer SO GREATLY -- please take two minutes out of your day to make a call on thier behalf!! [see below contact info for info on amendment] Thank you!! Michele Here are my Senators: Sen. Barbara Boxer 112 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510-0501 Phone: (202) 224-3553 Fax: (415) 956-6701 Sen. The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on an amendment offered by Senator Akaka to protect downed animals in the next day or two. It is critical for animal advocates to contact their U.S. Senators to urge them to support the Akaka Downed Animal Amendment. This amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations bill seeks to prevent the U.S. Department of Agriculture from approving meat from downed animals (animals too sick even to stand) for human food. It will remove the market for downed animals, and it will provide the necessary incentive to prevent the problem from occurring in the first place. Approximately 90% of downed animals can be prevented with better care on the farm and during transit. Downed animals suffer horribly. They are commonly dragged with chains or pushed with tractors and forklifts on their way to slaughter. Downed animals commonly languish for hours or days without receiving food, water or veterinary care, and many die of neglect. Using meat from downed animals poses a threat to human consumers. Downers are among the most likely animals to harbor bacterial contamination and to be afflicted with various diseases, including mad cow disease. Please contact your two U.S. Senators NOW and urge them to vote Yes on the Akaka Downed Animal Amendment! Call your two Senators at 202-224-3121, or send them an automatic fax by visiting our web site: http://action.fund.org/action/index.asp?step=2 & item=5092 For more information on downed animals, please visit: http://www.nodowners.org
