Guest guest
Dear Animal Advocates, Vigilers, Lovers & Liberators: The Vigil/Protests at UCSF continue, with protests scheduled for Noon on October 24 (Friday), 11:30 am on October 28 (Tuesday) in conjunction with National Primate Liberation Week (organized/promoted by Stop Animal Exploitation Now (SAEN), and " tentatively " October 31 (Halloween). The dates and times for UCSF vigil-protests this month are a bit different from preivious month - so please note the schedule below: Oct 24 (Friday), Noon (as usual) Oct 28 (Tuesday), 11:30 am - National Primate Liberation Week Oct 31 (Friday) - 4-6 pm - tentative, based on enough interested participants. If you want to go under the guise of an animal* and protest at UCSF on Halloween, please let me (Bob O'Brien) know. *preferrably as a nonhuman primate or a species of animal incarcerated at UCSF; i.e., cat, dog, rabbit, sheep, pig, etc. RECENT VIOLATIONS BY UCSF: Staff did not follow protocol regarding a research project involving monkeys (cited under Section 2.31, Federal Animal Welfare Law), which resulted in a monkey suffering undue pain. What this meant to the monkey was that he came out of brain surgery and was placed into his cage yet was not monitored every half hour as the protocol called for. Instead he was not checked for over 12 hours. As the federal inspector said, this " led to a lack of post-surgical analgesia [pain killer], resulting in the animal experiencing unnecessary pain and distress associated with a craniotomy. " And the aforementioned is just one of numerous examples of recent violations by UCSF. Other violations include the principle investigator (of the above research project) neglecting to " seek veterinary input " regarding the project, inadequate training of lab personnel, unsanitary conditions in the labs, and more. And all the more reason to join us in protest this month. (Words in quotes are from the Inspection Report by Michael Smith, Veterinary Medical Officer, USDA, 3/13/2003.) Many thanks to In Defense of Animals for keeping us up to date on recent violations. Also, we just received protocols on cats (ab)used at UCSF. Though I have not had time to review the protocols, Kristina Hoerler has skimmed through some of the materials - and from what she tells me, the protocols show UCSF researchers to be quite inane, as well as inhumane. Stay tuned for more info on cats at UCSF as time goes on.... [PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TO UCSF: UCSF is located at 513 Parnassus Avenue in San Francisco, easily reached by the N Judah streetcar (get off at Arguello, and then walk up the hill to Parnassus) or the the 6-Parnassus bus or 43-Masonic bus, both of which stop in front of UCSF on Parnassus Avenue.] Bob O'Brien For the Vigil PS: Hey, if anyone can help with creating props, signs, artwork (leaflet/newsletter design), and summarizing UCSF protocols on animals, please contact me at vigilforanimals or telephone at 415-751-3756.
