Today's Reuters news report offers this:

> The government, which is working to revise both the pyramid and the

dietary

> guidelines by early 2005, has called for input from dietitians,

nutritionists,

> academics, industry representatives, and other interested professionals.

The link to the USDA federal register information is included in the article

above, along with the address to send recommendations and suggestions.

NOTE:

In December of 1999, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

(PCRM), a national health advocacy group, filed a lawsuite against the

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health

and Human Services (DHHS). Six of the eleven appointed Advisory Committee

Members were financially tied to the meat, dairy, or egg industries and PCRM

filed the suit citing conflicts of interest. In October, 2000 the court

ruled against the USDA's secrecy and failure to disclose conflict of

interest in setting nutrition policies. PCRM won this law suit after the

revised pyramid had been formally issued, but now their suggestions for

revision of the food pyramid will be considered anew for 2005.

For more information about PCRM's suggested food pyramid guidelines and the

law suit, please go to http://www.pcrm.org/news/lawsuit.html
