" The purpose of World Farm Animals Day is to manifest, memorialize, mourn,

and mitigate the needless suffering and death of 50 billion cows, pigs, and

other innocent, sentient animals each year in the world's factory farms and

slaughterhouses. It also exposes the other devastating effects of today’s

intensive animal agriculture on human health and environmental quality. The

date, October 2, honors the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the foremost

champions of humane farming. "
