Hi all,

Andrea, how nice to see your note! I'm glad to hear you're going to give

veganism a try.

Regarding resources about making the transition from veggie to vegan -- I'd

suggest reading up on the health benefits of not eating dairy and eggs, and

about the factory farming aspects in dairy and egg production.. not to

mention the environmental impacts! I'm just thinking that having more

information about " why " you would want to avoid eating eggs/dairy will be a

helpful motivator.

When I went vegan, I missed cheese more than I missed eating 'meat' or any

other animal products. And perhaps I now know there really was a reason

why! According to Dr. Neal Barnard's new book, Breaking the Food Seduction,

certain foods may have brain effects that keep us wanting more. I haven't

read the book yet, but here is a couple of sentences from a book review in

PCRM's magazine 'Good Medicine': " Analyzing samples of cow's milk, they

found traces of a chemical that looked very much like morphine. They put it

to one chemical test after another. And, finally, they arrived at the

conclusion that, in fact, it is morphine. There is not a lot of it, and not

every sample had detectable levels. But there is indeed some morphine in

both cow's milk and human milk. Morhpine, of curse, is an opiate and is

highly addictive "

And I guess we'd have to read the book to get the full story...

As far as having foods that are " cheese like " , there is a vegan cookbook

called The Uncheese Cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak. She's a wonderful

cookbook author and perhaps there are some recipes in there that might

provide some new tastes that you like.

I'd just suggest that when you try any of these vegan foods, don't compare

them to their animal-based counterpart. Judge them on their own merits.

For myself, I found that foods that I tried when I first became awful were

not at all palatable.. but when I tried them 6 months later, I actually

liked them!

We'll have a table at Doggone Fun Run next weekend in Golden Gate Park --

we'll have lots of information and we'd be happy to share any of it with

ya....

Cheers,

Tammy
