Guest guest
I have personally never had a problem w/ stereotypes being directed at me. If people call you anything you dislike, like a hippie for instances, simply thrown it back at them and ask them what their definition of that word is and as they answer, every time they say something that isn't a quality or view or mannerism that you possess, then say it. Then ask them what makes you a hippie? Just say that you want to live as least destructive a lifestyle as possible, if that's possible, then why not pursue that sort of lifestyle or mind set? Stereotypes are for the dim anyway, I wouldn't give them much of my time, you can always tell them that it doesn't give people the impression if someone judges like that, but before you say that why don't you make assumptions about them based on what they're dressed like or where they're from. Show them how silly it is to make that sort of judgement. I also have one piece of advice, whenever you talk to non vegans about the issue of meat and they tell you how good it tastes, this line is a good way to avoid friction: " I'm not opposed to people liking the way meat tastes, it's just that there are humane alternatives that taste the same. " PS If anyone wants to know about a good Vegan deli in San Jose, just give a shout and I'll post. --Daria Message: 2 Thu, 28 Aug 2003 17:58:46 -0700 (PDT) Kristy Powell Stereotypes of veg*ns I am wondering if anyone else finds that in their day to day life, they encounter gross stereotypes of veg*ns. How do you respond to this? I've been a vegetarian for 10 years, but up until now, have not really encountered this, and I don't know how to respond. Of specific interest to many around me is a stereotype I don't understand. I'm politically conservative, and when people find this out, they cry, " but you're a vegetarian! " What does one have to do with the other? People also seem to think I'm a " hippie. " How do others respond to this? Just curious. . .always looking for good responses! : ) Thanks! Peace, Love, Joy, Kristy " ...there is the matter of rhetoric on " terrorism " ostensibly inspired by Islam--as opposed to political grievance finding a religious vocabulary- Time and again since 11 September one hears of " Islamic terrorists " and of battling those opposed to " Western values, " slogans that drown out intelligent talk of social justice and ethics in foreign policy.
