Guest guest
You can call it “economic sabotage” and find plenty of other colorful euphemisms, but the word for what these people are perpetrating is vandalism. Vandalism done to cause hardship and suffering to people, with the justification that said people are causing suffering to animals. While I find the production of foie gras abhorrent and horrifying, I fail to see how inflicting this type of damage stops the chain of abuse and suffering that continues daily. The ducks whose bloated livers were destined to be served on a plate in this restaurant are still being tortured, eventually to be served at another location. What it does show, is that the vandals have no qualms about using the tactics and techniques they are protesting,, in order to inflict pain on fellow humans. It may not be the type of physical pain that the ducks suffer, however the end result is similar. No solution is created. For every 25 people who are out there educating others and raising awareness about the horrors of raising animals for consumption in this manner, it only takes 1 action such as this to push the dialog back and create hostility and anger instead of understanding and cooperation. By staying silent, those of us who oppose this type of action are tacitly condoning it. We passively destroy our vision of a non-violent world, free of suffering and torture. If compassion is to flourish, we need to offer it most to those who display it the least.
