Guest guest
Hi everyone, As some of you know I am an amateur pipe organ builder. I've been researching various ways to replicate animal products used in organ building (leather, shellac, hot hide glue, etc) with vegan alternatives. Hot hide glue is traditionally used (basically, it's gelatin) because it dries very quickly and is easily undoable later. Unlike white carpenter's glue, when some bit of cloth attached to a moving part needs to be replaced you just soak the piece in hot water and the glue comes right off without leaving a residue. Not so with regular glues. Hot glue also dries very brittle, so if you ever need to un-glue two pieces of wood you just give them a good whack and they just come apart without splintering the wood. I can't help thinking agar-agar may also have these happy properties. Does anyone have experience in using agar-agar as an adhesive? Any recommendations where to find it in powdered form at reasonable prices in S.F.? thanks, DG
Guest guest
regarding where to find agar-agar in SF, I believe Rainbow Grocery sells it in their bulk department. I'm not sure of the price but Rainbow is generally less expensive than other such stores so it's probably a decent price especially since it's sold in bulk.
