Greetings,

FYI, I wish there were more events in the East Bay. There are

plenty of places beyond SF to eat at like for example Slice of Life

in Sebastapol (servers vegan breakfast all day). It is so difficult

to park in SF coming from Newark, CA it makes for a very expensive

day.

Smokey Joe's on Shattuck (in the Gourmet Ghetto, next to the amazing

Cha-Ya) serves vegetarian and vegan breakfast and brunch all day.

They have been doing it for over 25 years. It does not indicate

that the pancakes can be made vegan on the menu; however, if you

request it they will make you special plain or blueberry bananna

pancakes! So of you might think they are too greasy; however, I

think they are much healthier than your average non-veg diner.

Highly recommended from a fellow vegan.

Has anyone else eaten at these places?

Also, I tend to avoid all non-veg Indian restaurants since they tend

to put ghee in everything. I went to a place on the east coast that

told me there was absoltuely no dairy in what they served me. I

came back again and they told me " just a touch of cream " was in all

items. As with most restaurants, if they are already veg

and/organic, you will have better luck getting vegan food...

My experience at Smokey Joe's, several years ago, was the worst I've ever

had in any restaurant! Maybe someone can tell me that it was a bad day,

because I really had high hopes for the place. It was my one and only time

there, and this is what happened:

1) I ordered home fries and toast, juice and coffee. At the time, several

years ago, this normally cost about $6.

2) The fries I got were the greasiest I'd ever seen, and appeared to have

been sitting on their grill for hours, maybe even over night (I was there

early in the morning during the week). They were hard, crunchy and

translucent. And I'm NOT picky.

3) There was at least one hair in the potatoes.

4) A large, noticable cockroach crossed my path across the counter (I was

seated at the counter).

5) The total for the breakfast was $2 more than any restaurant I was

accustomed to eating at. I've been to Mama's on Broadway, Westside Bakery

and others.

I would love to hear other experience with the establishment, and hope they

were going through a hiccup in time and normally offer a pleasant

experience!
