Guest guest
Nancy, the manager of Golden Era in San Francisco, just told me that she has taken all of the veggie ham, (called " soy protein " on the menu), out of all dishes there and at Golden Lotus in Oakland because it might not be vegan. I got the impression when talking to her that she had no idea that some of her veggie ham was not vegan until this matter was discussed on this listserve. That's when she looked into the matter and found that some was vegan and some was not. She will substitute tofu in those dishes. She has found a new source for vegan veggie ham that she will try soon and, if it tastes good enough, she will substitute that back into the same dishes. She also responded to a comment that a waiter had told a customer that all meals labeled " gluten " were, in fact, made with soy. She told me that the waiter was wrong. (Some waiters there do not speak English very well.) Dishes listed on the menu as containing " gluten " are made from wheat flour on the premises, she said, and, unless soy is listed separately, there is no soy in her wheat gluten dishes. So, if you're allergic to soy but not to wheat gluten, the menu should be accurate, and vise versa.
