Guest guest
Wow! The power of the SFBAveg community! If only fast-food retailers, vivisectors, Neiman Marcus and the rest of 'em were as receptive to our wishes as Golden Era.... Pete [plcohon] Monday, July 21, 2003 3:37 PM [sfBAVeg] Veggie ham at Golden Era/Golden Lotus Nancy, the manager of Golden Era in San Francisco, just told me that she has taken all of the veggie ham, (called " soy protein " on the menu), out of all dishes there and at Golden Lotus in Oakland because it might not be vegan. I got the impression when talking to her that she had no idea that some of her veggie ham was not vegan until this matter was discussed on this listserve. That's when she looked into the matter and found that some was vegan and some was not. She will substitute tofu in those dishes. She has found a new source for vegan veggie ham that she will try soon and, if it tastes good enough, she will substitute that back into the same dishes. She also responded to a comment that a waiter had told a customer that all meals labeled " gluten " were, in fact, made with soy. She told me that the waiter was wrong. (Some waiters there do not speak English very well.) Dishes listed on the menu as containing " gluten " are made from wheat flour on the premises, she said, and, unless soy is listed separately, there is no soy in her wheat gluten dishes. So, if you're allergic to soy but not to wheat gluten, the menu should be accurate, and vise versa. BAY AREA VEGETARIANS (BAV) is a community group for veggies to network & find support. Guest guest
Here, here, Nora! If only! When I read about Golden Era/Golden Lotus' ham, it was like hearing the Tooth Fairy didn't exist. I *trusted* the restaurant to serve me vegan food. Perhaps I'm naive. Now I feel comfortable returning to the " Golden " restaurants, based on Pete's report. Long live SFBAVeg! ~Caity > Wow! Guest guest
Hi all, Caity, I have to agree with what you said.. > When I read about Golden Era/Golden Lotus' ham, it was like hearing the > Tooth Fairy didn't exist. I *trusted* the restaurant to serve me vegan > food. Perhaps I'm naive. I'll usually ask once or twice when I'm new to a restaurant, but when I return, and order the same dishes, I usually don't ask. I just " assume " everything is the same as before. I know I have been caught on this before when buying processed foods. It's vegan and then some product reformulation happens and it's not, but the packaging looks exactly the same and you have no clue anything's changed until you read the ingredient list. I just wish all businesses were as receptive to their customers as Golden Era & Golden Lotus and their owners are. Thanks for the news, Pete. > The power of the SFBAveg community! Like Nora said.... Veggie Power!!! :-) I really think it's great that we have this community to share information and be together. Cheers, Tammy
