Guest guest
Has anyone else tried the Hungry Hollow tomatoes at Central Market? The case I bought today is even better than the one I got last week, and it was spectacular! These tomatoes are the most sweet, crisp and flavorful I've ever had. They have several varieties but the best are the " Mini Charm " , a small, very red, oval-ish cherry. The pint price goes way down on a case ($37 for 12 pints) and is apparently going down to $31 on Monday. Got a good deal on a case of the Japanese cucumbers too, $17 for 10 pounds (they are normally $3/lb.). Has anyone noticed whether they have these at the farmers market? Central still has lots of jakfruit as well. Apparently only about 60% of them are ripening without rotting, so buying a whole one is risky. Guest guest
Nora, Are you going to dehydrate any of them? If you do, please tell me if they turn out well. I recently purchased a vacume pack and am thinking of all the dried fruits and vegetables I can seal up into storage. Guest guest
My parents are here staying with me. It's been hectic. I finally got around to make a trip to Central Market. I asked one the guys for mini charms. He went in the office, checked and came out to point me at some cherry tomatoes in green baskets and covered with pink nets, priced 3.98 per basket. I forgot that Nora said they were ovalish. These are round. They brix 6/7 which, I believe, is poor for cherry tomatoes. They are not as tasty as sungolds from my backyard last year. 6 is average for large tomatoes Cherry tomatoes are generally more tasty than large tomatoes and are supposed to brix much higher. If I get a chance to go to CM I'll look for the ovalish ones. Guest guest
Hi Helen, Thanks for checking them out. You probably got the right ones. There are oval and round ones in the same basket. They vary widely from fruit to fruit. The more oval, small and red they are, the sweeter. And some of them are really super sweet. The rounder ones aren't as good. I've noticed that some of them have a vertical split kind of like a stretch mark. These are especially sweet (as long as they're not moldy in the split). Of course my point of reference is the pathetic plastic orbs we've been getting all year so maybe I'm just easy to please. I can hardly wait to harvest my own!
