Guest guest
Sue and I had our 15 mo old tested by our homeopathic doctor using " The Carroll Test " for food intolerances (not allergies, which indicate an immune response), foods that the body supposedly has difficulty digesting. This test indicated that she is intolerant of all fruit, including olives, cashews, avocado. As you can imagine, we are weighing the options at this time and are wondering if anyone in the Seattle raw community has any knowledge of this test and/or experience with it. We are really wanting to remain raw in our family, but we're also having a hard time contemplating what a diet devoid of all fruit would look like. Any thoughts?? Guest guest
Hi Jim, I tried sending this message to you privately, but it was returned. Just so you know, I'm not a parent myself, but I do have access to some good information about rearing children on a raw natural diet. What I'll offer here are just some general ideas for you to consider with regard to the problems your baby is having with certain foods. Firstly, it occurs to me that your baby may be too young to be weaned from breast milk. There may be factors that are making early weaning necessary, so I'm just tossing this idea out for your consideration. A baby should not be weaned until s/he is fully equipped to chew and digest food. That means a full mouth of teeth, not just one or two. If the mouth is not properly equipped to effectively masticate solid food, it may be assumed that the digestive system is not fully able to handle it either. Secondly, health professionals generally labor under the same cultural expectations as the rest of us with regard to the too-early weaning of infants. (Most health professionals, ironically, also know very little about real health.) Therefore it may not occur to your doctor that it is perfectly normal and natural for a baby to be unable to digest solid food at such an early age. S/he might assume that a pathological situation exists, when it is most likely just the case that your baby is not ready for solid foods or that the foods you are choosing are particularly difficult for babies to digest. Here are some interesting excerpts from an essay that was written by Herbert Shelton called " Indigestion in Babies " : " Indigestion in children under two seems to be very common. What causes it? Nerve energy is functioning power and anything that lowers nerve energy and brings on enervation will cause indigestion: Excessive play, overexcitement, overindulgence, overeating, eating between meals, eating when tired, or when excited, starch eating before the end of the second year, being tired from outings, neglect of the afternoon nap, being overheated or chilled, drugging (in which category supplements, herbs or remedies of any sort would be included). The first symptoms of indigestion are " nervousness " , irritability, bad breath, bloated bowels, coated tongue, cold feet, constipation, colic, hives, sleeplessness, grinding of the teeth in sleep, drooling. What can be done about indigestion in babies? Remove the cause. Stop the overfeeding. Cease overexciting the baby. Discontinue feeding it between meals and at night. Cease feeding starch and other foods which it is not physiologically equipped to handle. Give it less juice. Stop overbathing. Dress it more warmly or less warmly, as required. Do not permit it to overplay. Give due attention to its afternoon sleep. Give up the drugging (remedies, herbs, etc.). " In the same article, Shelton says that until a baby is two years old it should have no other food besides breast milk and fruit juices. Although he only mentions starch foods specifically as being inappropriate, the fatty foods you listed in your post would also fall into that category -- olives, avocados, nuts and seeds of all kinds, etc. These foods are even very difficult for adults to digest. I hope this information is helpful. There is lots to explore and much more I could offer, but I'd have to know more about your particular situation. Feel free to contact me privately if you're interested.
