my grandpa is a new raw foodest and he loves durian, and i know the frozen ones

are kinda bad, but i want to get some frozen ones for him! so,

do i have to go all the way to the asian markets in Seattle?

hmmm... i want to get frozen durians for really cheap and so i can make them

into smoothies!

if anyone knows anything, maybe between 50-$100 lb. or has any advice, that

The only frozen durians outside of Chinatown I'm aware of are at Ranch 99 Market

(North Aurora and Kent/Renton), Uwajimaya, Viet Wah (on S.

Rainier?) and Central Market (also North Aurora). Ranch 99 sells them cheap, 79

cents/pound I believe, same w/ Viet Wah, but Uwajimaya and

Central are high, about $1.50. Imho they are not worth buying at Uwajimaya as

they don't keep them frozen and the fruit ferments. I don't have

any info about how good the Ranch 99 durians are but last time I got one at Viet

Wah on/near Rainier, it was good. Chinatown is the cheapest

(usually .69 per pound), most reliable place to get them, but you have to make

sure you get one that has not been thawed. Look for light color

and pointy (uncrushed) thorns, which means the fruit has been frozen since

shortly after it was harvested. Central Market by far has the most

reliably good durians, because they take care to keep them frozen until you buy

them. Durian doesn't combine too well with other foods because of

its unique, sweet, fatty nature. If you want to enjoy durian a different way

besides right out of the pod, you might try just putting the fruit

in your Vita Mix and blending till very smooth. It makes a delicious pudding.

If you're not concerned about combining, you can add blueberries

or sliced bananas after blending.

Nora,

I would recommend strongly against the Ranch 99 Durians. I ate them for a

while, but then I had a bad experience with one. Nothing life-threatening, just

bizarre chemical nightmares - to me that suggested that they might use chemicals

in their growing process. If anyone knows of a scientific way to confirm this

please let me know. Here in Morgantown the choices are much more limited and I

want to know that what I'm getting is healthy.
