Guest guest
Hey all, I'd like to start eating only raw foods. I was wondering what I can do to make it affordable. I'm a student so I don't have a ton of money to blow on organic produce (I live in the U district). Giving up cooked foods and other stuff isn't going to be a problem for me just finding a way to afford all raw foods. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Arian
Guest guest
Arian, Welcome to the list! Great health is an investment. It's a shame that the cheapest foods can be the least beneficial to health. Central Market, in Shoreline, offers great case prices to us raw fooders. They've even begun to put out the 3 pound bags of organic spring mix for anyone who wants them. We usually need to inquire about what fruits and veggies are available in cases, otherwise we can pre-order the cases. They typically give us the case cost plus 25%. This does make it more affordable for us to eat organics. If cases sound like too much, you can arrange sharing cases with friends or others on this list. Raw foodists occasionally will purchase cases, take what they can eat, then bring the remainder to potlucks to share the discount. If you don't have transportation, perhaps we can have a discussion on this list about sharing rides. Some of our members had started a buying club/co-op. I haven't heard much about it, so don't think it is active. PCC also gives case discounts (only 10% though you can ask if they will match other prices.) I hope this helps. Guest guest
Welcome to the group, Arian! Eventually the U District farmers market will open (50th & University Ave., Saturdays), that will be a great place to buy your stuff seasonally. And if you visit our regular potlucks, you can take advantage of others' purchasing " coups " , as Jeff mentioned. For restaurants, Chaco Canyon Café (corner of 50th & Brooklyn) offers a regular raw menu, and is quite affordable. Guest guest
PCC gives substantial discounts on cases of organic produce too. Their policy states that cases should be sold at 10% under retail, but the main produce buyer told me the only store that follows the rule is Issaquah. All the others apparently sell for just a bit over wholesale. I just bought a 40 pound case of organic Valencias at the Kirkland store for $27.25, which works out to be $.68 per pound.
