Please pass this on to your friends and ask them to pass this on to their friends and relevant list servs!! Imagine This…Home and Landscape Tour Featuring the best in community and eco-friendly homes and landscapes, as well as the businesses that create them. The Sustainable Connections “Imagine This…Home and Landscape Tour”, in the greater Bellingham area, will provide an opportunity for residents to visit homes and landscapes that demonstrate community building and environmentally friendly strategies. Examples will include green and reused building materials, urban fruit and vegetable gardens, co-housing, pedestrian friendly development, rain water collection and use, native and organic landscaping, permeable surfaces and other examples of low impact development. Tour attendees will get great ideas for their homes and landscapes and will be able to interact with knowledgeable local companies that specialize in these areas. When: July 12th from 10 am to 4 pm How Much: $12 per person, OR carpool, and SAVE! Carloads get in for $30. OR Feeling ambitious and care to pedal the tour? Attendees on bikes not only get in for $8, but they will also have a chance to win a free bike from Kulshan Cycles! Got about 20 miles in you? This is what we estimate it will take to visit a minimum of 5 sites. Purchase tickets on the day of the event BEGINNING AT 9:30 am at: The Gardens at Padden Creek - 2014 Old Fairhaven Parkway, A-1 Builders - 3310 Northwest Avenue, OR 2149 Northshore Rd Where: Ten sites with equal representation of home and landscape strategies that stretch the imagination. See all 10 main sites and get entered in a raffle for a $50 Gift Certificate from the RE Store! What else: Participants will receive a comprehensive Resource Guide that includes a detailed tour map, profiles of all stops and strategies demonstrated, a directory of relevant specialized businesses, and resources for further information. What Will I See? Many topics will be covered, including: Building Materials – One of the topics addressed on the tour is use (or better yet, re-use) of building materials. Over 1/3 of the raw materials entering the world’s economy, 11% of the total energy expended in the United States, and 40% of landfill area in Washington state, is consumed by construction. Fortunately, many builders and innovative businesses like the RE Store are minimizing materials use, carefully deconstructing buildings and reusing or reselling valuable materials. The tour will feature beautifully designed homes that have made good use of re-used and ecofriendly materials. There is even a straw bale house on the tour! This can't be missed. Organic and Native Landscaping – Organic landscaping with native plants saves time and money. Because native plants are accustomed to this area, little or no soil preparation, fertilizers or irrigation are necessary. Native plants are naturally accustomed to interacting with local pests, minimizing or eliminating the need for pesticides. Even time spent pruning can be cut back, because native plants tend to curb their own growth at a natural size. Some experts declare that up to 1/5th of our landfill area is taken up by lawn and garden cuttings. Other benefits include increasing soil health, a “back to nature” feeling you will get from just hanging out in your own yard, and you'll attract native fauna! Volunteer Opportunities: GET FREE ADMISSION AND A FREE T-SHIRT from Naked Clothing. Volunteers are still needed for this event to help answer questions, assist with parking and distribute materials.
