Guest guest
What a fantastic turnout at our first ever Welcome Party for Victoria's graduates! Generally, 12-30 people show up for our " LAST Saturday of the month " potluck. Last night, however, we stopped counting people at 40! You outdid yourselves RawSeattle! One new person (raw for only a week) hugged me soooo tightly while jumping up and down with pure joy and excitement. She was so glad to have had the experience of our raw hospitality. At least 12 new people attended. One person learned about Victoria's class from the Seattle Times story, and thus the potluck. More people find the potlucks through their internet searches...and word of mouth. --------------- Thank you's: Thank you Richard for beginning the conversation about support groups and the importance of support during this transition....and after! Thanks to Richard for loaning us the two food tables in the sun room. Thank you Virginia (rawlicious) for sharing with us how Raw Oly holds support meetings and study groups (a book at a time) in Olympia. Thank you Terry (tjm729) for sharing the incredible computerized biofeedback technology of HeartMath. Many people enjoyed that experience. Thank you Socorro (smaia) for the applesauce-making demo and young coconut-opening demo. Also, thank you for bringing the case of Valentia oranges to sell for .35 each! Thank you Jeff (jeff) for the young and mature coconut-opening demos. Also, thanks for bringing a case of Romaine lettuce to sell for $1 each--- AND a case of humongous Nappa cabbage for $3.25 each. What a deal, when we share the savings with each other. Thank you, thank you, for the " refuse angel " , Atilla, for hauling away 2 of the 3 bags of garbage we generated. (I found one bag outside next to the already full can.) My garbage man comes on Monday, so unfortunately, my single can is already full BEFORE the potluck. Thank you Ron for playing the piano for us and feeling comfortable with all of us; being your first exposure to us (and raw?). Thank you for the clean-up offers! As you can imagine, cleaning up after such a party can be a daunting task. Thank you for the food leftovers. :-) I just tasted a teaspoon of this and that throughout the night and it was nice to have lunch the next day already prepared. (NOT expected, please understand!) Thank you all for coming to the party and helping Raw Seattle to break a record for attendance. We have never had THREE tables of food before. Awesome! ----- We did good this time! Only one Pyrex lid and two water bottles were left behind! I believe the new folks were duly impressed about how delicious raw food can be...and about how loving, supportive and accepting we all are.... a great place to be when feeling unsure. Phone number lists were exchanged, 5 durians, a case of young coconuts, and even a warm raw lasagna was made-- just for the newbies. Old timers had a hard time holding themselves back from this long-time favorite-- until the newbies had gone through the line first. Perhaps next time, several lasagna's will show up, to feed 40 people! :-) While all this connecting and eating was going on, people were experiencing HeartMath on the top floor, while others were watching Victoria's video on food prep-- in the basement. It was a full house. We may be looking for a new venue when we hit 50! Wouldn't that be wonderful? So far, we have not needed to rent a space and charge admission to pay for the space. I truly believe that we will get more people if we do not have to charge. There are a few considerations however, now that the group has grown to such a wonderful size. Since this is not a commercial kitchen with oodles of plates and eating utensils (and a dumpster), I remind you about a few small things-- to keep this going so beautifully. 1) Please, please bring your own plates and eating utensils and cloth napkins. If we don't use paper products, there will be no need for garbage, since most of the food scraps go into my compost. However, " angels " who can haul away the garbage we do accumulate-- are immensely appreciated. 2) If anybody is able to donate plastic plates, bowls, or small re-washable plastic glasses, for me to store from potluck to potluck, this would save me the expense. There's always somebody who forgets, or didn't know to bring these things. I have 10 plates to help out and about 2 doz. bowls. I also have cloth napkins. This is YOUR group/family and I'm so happy to provide the venue for you to meet- honestly! I mean that from the bottom of my heart. " This house is your house, " many people have heard me say. Come and go as you please. Treat it with the same respect you would your own. That philosophy has worked and I expect it to continue that way. I love you all!
