Raw & steamy food fight

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/col/story/39721p-37515c.html

An interesting article! It starts out interesting, even entertaining,

then takes a sour turn with quotes like this:

" To think that a string bean, once it's steamed, is less beneficial

than a raw string bean is insane, " says Jennifer Berg, director of

the graduate program in food studies at New York University. "

I'm amazed at how closed-minded some " scientists " are. How can

someone look at a cooked, dead string bean and say it's the same as a

fresh live one??? Even if science suggests they have similar

ingredients, it seems fairly obvious they are not the same, and

perhaps there is more in live food than we have yet discovered!(?) We

are what we eat! The live food has energy, as seen in kurlian (sp?)

photography, the dead - minimal. If I am what I eat, I'd rather be

live and have energy!

Jeff,

It may take awhile for the idea that live food is better to take hold in the mainstream medical realm. In the early 70's the AMA (American Medical Association) came out saying you didn't need vitamin supplements unless you had rickets or scurvy. They contended that anyone who was getting a typical diet (which they didn't describe in detail) was fine without supplements. My dad was a family practice doctor, and he parroted this message to all of his patients and all of us in the family. Although I respected my father was a brilliant man in many respects, as a teenager at the time I was suspicious of this claim and never accepted it.

Recently, the Seattle Times published an article by the AMA rescinding that statement and firmly stating that unless you get the recommended 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables you are probably missing out on important minerals and vitamins and should be taking a supplement. This conclusion was arrived at as a result of scientific study. There is now a website sponsored by the establishment at http://5aday.com that promotes produce for better health. Sponsors naturally include some groups that want to increase their business, but also many that want to reduce theirs....

American Cancer Society (ACS)United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA)Association of State and Territorial Directors of Health Promotion and Public Health Education (ASTDHPPHE)National Cancer Institute (NCI)Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH)Produce Marketing Association (PMA)United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association (UFFVA)

Granted they make no mention that fresh produce is healthier than cooked, but that conclusion is backed by authoritative study data, and it will be a matter of time before that data makes it into a promotional program. For now the best thing to do is to direct authors like Ms. Skenazy to the relevant reports. Likely she is just parroting what she's been told by uninformed authorities like my dad did.
