Guest guest
I just got an organic papaya from Central Market, brixed 12.5 (10 is average according to my reference chart). This is the first time I found a papaya with an above average brix in my good papaya search. At first I stayed with organic ones because I don't trust the non-organic papayas. They grow generically-modified papayas in Hawaii. I have tried those big non-organic papayas from Mexico, thinking they are less likely to be genetically modified than those from Hawaii (We know America is leading in GMO in the world. Alas, America is leading the world astray!) but the brixes turned out to be not that great either. The organic papaya in Central Market is from Kumu farm in Hawaii, selling for $3.98/lb. The little papaya I got cost me 6 bucks! Last Tuesday I bought a couple Jonagold apples from WF market at 1.19/lb. The brix turned out to be nearly 14. When I went back Thursday to get more, it became 1.89/lb ;-( The brix of the Cameos that they are having a special on 1.99/lb was 12, like most the apples I've checked. They have Spitzenburg for 2.99/lb ! Helen
Guest guest
At least we know the organic papayas should not be GMO. I just bought one from Central myself this afternoon, but haven't tried it yet. I was discussing with the staff there, the matter of radiation treatment of all papayas leaving Hawaii. When I lived there, I understood that most all fruit leaving Hawaii was treated to prevent fruit flies from spreading (of course we NEVER see fruit flies in Seattle! Perhaps they are a different variety.) Anyway, they said they do not accept fruit that has had radiation treatment. These papayas have likely been steamed. The other method is hot water treatment. They said the papayas are treated while still green. Since they manage to ripen after being steamed, it must not be very severe. Perhaps it's only skin deep.
