Guest guest
It's the apples' season. There was apple tasting in the U-district farmers' market. All the farmers put their samples on one table for a contest. Some kind of green apple (i forgot the name of the variety) from Kukes farm won the tasters choice. I thought their pinklady was better. What i found sweetest was Bill's ( probably Homestead farm) golden delicious. You can smell them passing by. I checked one, brixed 15, which is the highest I have ever had. 14 is considered good for apple and 18 is excellent but I have never found one beyond 15. Mike and Liza's (from Lake Chelan) Spitzenburg (not sure about spelling) also brixed 15. They are not the sweetest kind but the flavor is rich. Their booth is facing north and they are the only booth that has this variety. I usually either forget or am too lazy to bring my refractor to shop at farmers' market. Sometimes i am in a rush and don't have to time to check them. Sometimes i spent long time there chatting with the vendors. I got talking with Bill ( the big guy). He always greets me. I said i missed the market last week because I went join a street singing and passing out flyers about the Iraq war and civil liberty issues. I told him about the ten thousand people peace march on Oct. 6. He thanked me for doing these things. Mike and Liza always greet me too and I almost always buy something from them. I knew their Spitzenburg apples were good though. I love the friendly atmosphere of the market and feel i can relate to these people. I visit the U-district market religiously even when I have plenty of food at home. Helen
