hi eric...

good find. here's another site where you can learn about tropical fruit. http://www.nt.gov.au/ntg/search.shtml just enter a fruit into the search mechanism. you'll get a list of articles/sites related to your search and i find that the DBIRD - Primary Industry and Fisheries (Horticulture) seems to be the one we want for information.

at this site i learned that the dragon fruit is actually the fruit of a climbing cactus http://www.nt.gov.au/dbird/dpif/plants/horticulture/pitaya.shtml

which brings to mind a little cactus fruit story here...

in hawaii, i've eaten the leaves of roadside prickly pear cactus and always wanted to try the fruit. so last winter i visited a fruit farm in kona that grew prickly pear. we were touring the orchard sampling the various fruits and came to some of prickly pears that where fruiting so i popped one in my mouth and bit into it. big mistake... it turns out that the fruits are covered with tiny barbed spines. yup... spines in my lips, tongue, the roof of my mouth and my throat. they didn't hurt, more like an intense itch, but were pretty annoying and it took three days for them to totally "melt" away. duh... i wonder if that's why the plant is called a "prickly pear"? <grin>

norm :))~~~~ raw food... simply delicious ~~~
