3. Action Alert:

This effort would take no more than a few minutes of your time: Please consider writing to your House representatives as soon as today (February 11th) and urge them to support HB 2619, the " Laying Hen Protection " bill. As simple as that! You can easily find out who your two House representatives are: just go to http://dfind.leg.wa.gov/dfinder.cfm and enter your ZIP code or address.

About HB 2619: " HB 2619 provides that practices that result in the death of a certain number of laying hens at any one time is not an accepted husbandry practice and is not exempt from the animal cruelty law. It also requires the director of the Department of Agriculture to establish a program for conducting inspections of facilities in which one hundred or more laying hens are kept. Inspections must be unannounced if practicable and the director must report violations to the local prosecuting attorney. "

If passed, this bill would not only ensure a safer food supply, but also protect laying hens from abuse and neglect such as that which occurred at Amberson Egg Farm in Everett, WA in March 2000 (thousands of hens died when the farmer was allowed to starve them to death in his failing egg operation).

4. Membership promotion:

We are currently offering a special membership promotion until 30 June 2002 in addition to the one described above under 'Upcoming events'. All those who join, renew, or even extend at the $35 level or above, at our monthly potlucks, will receive a free copy of celebrated author John Robbins’ powerful new book, " The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and the World " (retail price: $17.95).EarthSave members recognize that special members-only discounts (typically 10%) at a number of area establishments more than make up for the cost of annual membership. Six new discount program partners have been added to our list, which currently exceeds thirty partners. Seehttp://seattle.earthsave.org/Members/Discounts.htm for the current list.
