Guest guest
I agree with Helen. Central Market's durian price is high, plus the quality isn't consistently good. I used to get durian at Viet Wah/Hoa, a Vietnamese retail grocer in Chinatown (676 S Jackson). I was buying it there because it was the first place I heard of that had durian. But then one time when Michele " Empress of durian " Rogalin told me that the 145th Street Market consistently had good durian, I started getting it there. Then when that store went out of business, I went back to buying it at Viet Wah/Hoa. But I got too many durians that weren't that good there, so I switched to Central Market. Now I've gotten some durians that weren't so good from them too, plus their price has gone up to $1.48/lb. Finally, at recent potlucks I've tasted some good durian which I've heard more than one raw fooder talk about getting from another place in Chinatown called the Hau Hau Market (412 12th S), for the cheap price of 69 cents/lb. I haven't visited that place yet, but plan to do so soon! Remember to look for cracks/splits and the yellow/golden hue! Can't wait to see y'all at Zita's! She has a big trampoline in her back yard! Yay! Guest guest
“Remember to look for cracks/splits and the yellow/golden hue!” Is this a good thing? The cracks/splits? I guess I’ve never really known how to pick a durian. Shari
