You Can Eat Your Pain Away! By Jackie Graff, R.N., B.S.NWe had requests from many new r to run this article again, if you have any aches and pains, this may help you.If you have Fibromyalgia, the solution to your pain, fatigue, sleep problems, brain fog, headaches and other common symptoms can be as close as your kitchen! Ten years ago I was obese, had joint pains, fatigue, depression, high blood pressure, chronic headaches, allergies, memory and concentration problems, hot flashes, and sleep problems. Although I was never diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I think that I was just a pizza, cookie, or ice cream away from this diagnosis. All of these conditions or symptoms have gone away since I started eating a diet of raw food eight years ago. Having been a nurse for almost 40 years, the patients I see now are younger with many more chronic diseases all of which could be prevented or diminished and eradicated with a change in diet. I know many suffering with fibromyalgia who relieved their symptoms and returned to a functional life by changing their diet. How can this work, you ask? First let us look at what has possibly caused this devastating chronic illness. Then I will show you why a diet of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds can reduce the inflammation and provide nutrients to heal the body. The cause of fibromyalgia is not known, but there are thought to be contributing factors such as an acute illness, injury, childbirth and other major events. These factors could be the last straw that causes a body already in an inflammatory process to go awry.Inflammation As scientists have delved into the causes of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, asthma, fibromyalgia and arthritis, they have started to see links to our immunological defense mechanism called inflammation, which is a lifesaver most of the time. They are now thinking that instead of the many chronic diseases, there is one disease, INFLAMMATION. An inflammatory process is initiated in various parts of the body for different people. Sometimes the inflammatory process does not shut down on cue, something keeps the process going and inflammation becomes chronic as the body turns on itself. There are numerous studies that are presently uncovering many new ways that chronic inflammation harms the body. Scientists believe that the human body in the evolutional process has been so successful at fighting off microbial invaders that these inflammatory defenses have gone past the bodies control. On top of this, they think that a lifestyle of diets high in sugar and saturated fat along with little or no exercise make it easier for the body to become inflamed. Doctors are finding evidence that inflammation plays a greater role in chronic diseases than they thought, but they do not necessarily know what to do about it. Inflammation is one of the hottest areas of research now. Researchers and pharmaceutical companies are discovering through studies that many anti-inflammatory drugs on the market now used to treat one disease are preventing others. They are all on the band wagon to create more drugs. Along with the benefits of some of these drugs are the dreaded side affects. You do not have to wait for more drugs to be developed! You can eat your pain away! By eating a diet of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, you will in time be able to throw away your pain killers, sleep medications, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, narcotics, and medications for irritable bowel. I know of hundreds of people who were suffering from fibromyalgia who are free of these symptoms, as long as they are on a diet of raw foods.One of the most potent weapons produced by inflammatory cells are free radicals. These free radicals destroy or damage anything that crosses their path. There are antioxidants in foods that can neutralize these free radicals and heal the body with phytonutrients. There are hundreds of phytonutrients but the benefits of the following have been well researched.Flavonoids found in apples, grapes, cranberries, strawberries, and grapes eliminate carcinogens, inhibit blood clots, guard against heart disease and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.Carotenoids found in carrots, citrus fruits, tomatoes. peppers, dark leafy greens, corn, pumpkin, beets. Lycopene is a type of caritinoid which can prevent skin and lung cancer. Luten, another can reduce the risk of blindness or macular degeneration.Turpenes found in citris, spinach, tomatoes eliminate cancer causing free radicals and reduce blood levels of LDL cholesterol lowering heart disease risk.Allyl Sulfides found in garlic, chives, leeks, onions, reduce blood cholesterol and help the liver eliminate cancer causing free radicals, and have antibacterial properties.Isothiocyanates found in cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, bok choy, kale, turnips, mustard greens, chard which trigger enzymes that suppress cancer related DNA damage.What about all of those phytonutrients in food we have not identified?Could you take a vitamin instead? Nutrients in food work synergistically , they work together, there is no substitution for the real thing. Also if you are still ingesting a cooked food diet, the inflammatory nature of the food is still there.Why does a diet of raw food decrease inflammation?When cooked food is eaten, leucocytosis occurs, this is a rise in the white blood count, the body's natural immune response. Check your temperature before eating and again 30-40 minutes after eating a meal of cooked food as the immune system goes into overdrive. This constant defense mechanism of the body has been proven to cause inflammation to many organs of the body. Many people eating a junk food diet have a chronic low-grade temperature. A raw food diet consists of organic uncooked fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds. It is more desirable to eat them uncooked because heating these foods above 110 destroys most vitamins, all of the enzymes and deranges the caloric nutrients( proteins, fats, carbohydrates).Proper nutrition is very important for all body functions. When there are not enough digestive enzymes to adequately digest food one can become deficient in caloric nutrients. All fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are made up of varying amounts of these caloric nutrients ( proteins, fats, carbohydrates). Calories are not changed by heat but fats are transformed to trans fatty acids, carbohydrates are caramelized (burned sugars), and proteins which are made up of amino acids are coagulated making them difficult to digest and assimilate. Large chunks of proteins are absorbed instead of the individual amino acids. The immune system then has to treat them as foreign invaders. This can exhaust the immune system. When these caloric nutrients are altered by heat the body processes them differently. This is why pigs fed raw potatoes do not gain weight and when fed cooked potatoes the same pigs gain weight.The body can heal itself. The health benefits of eating a raw food dietare: give the body nutrition keeping it from being deficient or malnourished and not putting in food that is difficult to digest and assimilate and cause problems or toxicity. We are the most overfed, malnourished nation on earth. Physicians agree that most chronic diseases can be prevented, overcome or improved by a change in the diet. The more raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds added to the diet the healthier the person will become. Most diets do not work. We should be eating for calories and nutrients. Calorie to nutrient ratio in cooked food- low nutrients in comparison to the calories. Raw food is high in nutrients and enzymes compared to the calories. The body does not function well if it is deficient in nutrients, the energy level is decreased, digestive problems such as indigestion, diarrhea, constipation can occur, inflammatory disorders rise, and many other conditions are contributed to enzyme deficienciesWhen people feel better as they change the way they eat- it is often more important what they leave out than what they eat. When one eats a raw food diet many things are left out such as pasta, potatoes, bread, sugar, unhealthy fats, meats, and dairy. When I would go back to eating cooked food, many of my symptoms would reoccur. I was addicted to cooked food and now I am addicted to feeling good and being able to live life to the fullest. It is my passion to teach as many people as possible the benefits of a raw food diet.There are some side affects to the raw food diet, such as weight loss, more energy, smoother, glowing, more youthful skin, hair is more shiny, reverses aging, eyesight improves, blood pressure drops, sinus problems and snoring disappear, digestive problems go away, breast lumps disappear, blood sugar normalizes, depression lifts, aches and pains are diminished or disappear, thinking is more clear. I know because I had all if these changes in myself after going on a diet of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. These are good side effects, compare them to some of the bad side affects of medications.Some well known athletes, performers, models, actors and actresses who are eating a raw food diet to improve their performance or looks because their livelihood depends on it and along with this they have their health. Without your health you have nothing.How can you do this?First get rid of all processed junk food in your diet. Eliminate sugar and trans fatty acids, colas, caffeine, preservatives. Add many uncooked fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. It can be as simple as eating fruit and salads and to prevent boredom and returning to cooked foods I developed many recipes which can substitute for just about every cooked food. You can have raw pie, cake, cookies, nut loaf, pizza, lasagna, tacos, and many other delicious recipes all made with raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.The following are quick and easy ways to get more raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds into your diet for busy people on the go or with low energy.· Try a fruit smoothie for breakfast ( just blend any of your favorite fruits together)· Eat fruit for breakfast· Blend a bunch of your favorite vegetables for a lunch vegetable smoothie or soup· Eat a big salad for lunch· Take a ripe avocado to eat with a salad from any salad bar· Take a lemon and some olive or flax oil for salad dressing· Take a bunch of your favorite vegetables to make a salad · Take fresh fruit for snacks· Take a mix of different raw nuts and seeds to put on a salad or for snacks· Take a mix of organic raisins, dates, figs, and apricots for snacks· Eat a big salad for dinner and after that eat whatever else you want, just eat plenty of raw first.· Water is the best choice for a liquid.· Drink a fresh (not pasteurized) vegetable juice every day.Some think this is too restrictive, and do not want to change their diet. Being sick with a chronic debilitating disease like fibromyalgia is more restrictive. Just try an all raw food diet for 2-3 weeks and see if you feel better.
