CONSTIPATION DEFINED http://www.hacres.com/healthtipArticles2007/485_5.asp Webster’s Dictionary defines CONSTIPATION as: “a condition of the bowels in which the feces are dry and hardened and evacuation is difficult and infrequent.” Dr. Balch in his book Prescription for Nutritional Healing expands on Webster’s definition with these words: “CONSTIPATION results when waste material moves too slowly through the large bowel, resulting in infrequent and/or painful elimination. CONSTIPATION can give rise to many different ailments, including appendicitis, bad breath, body odor, coated tongue, depression, Diverticulitis, fatigue, gas, headaches, hemorrhoids, hernia, indigestion, insomnia, malabsorption syndrome, obesity, and varicose veins. It may even be involved in the development of serious diseases such as bowel cancer.” Dr. Balch continues: “IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE BOWELS MOVE ON A DAILY BASIS! The colon is a holding tank for waste matter that should be removed within eighteen to twenty-four hours. Harmful toxins can form after this period. . . CONSTIPATION’S CAUSE Once again, we turn to Dr. Balch: “IN MOST CASES, CONSTIPATION ARISES FROM INSUFFICIENT AMOUNTS OF FIBER AND FLUIDS IN THE DIET. . .” Now that we have defined CONSTIPATION and learned its CAUSE, let’s delve into the subject a little deeper. THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM God, in his infinite wisdom, designed man with a very extensive and lengthy digestive tract, a digestive tract designed to process exclusively plant source foods. Between the mouth where food enters the body, and the anus where the waste material from the digestion of these foods exits the body, there are some 30-feet of tubing through which the food passes. When a person places food into their mouth, after masticating the food with their teeth and swallowing it, the food passes through the throat; esophagus; stomach; small intestine (comprised of three sections duodenum, jejunum, and ileum – approximately 23 FEET in length); large intestine (large bowel or colon in six sections (cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, sigmoid and rectum – approximately 5 FEET in length), and finally passes out through the anus. In this Health Tip, we are going to deal primarily with what transpires in the large intestine (large bowel or colon). The large intestine receives the residue of digestion (the great majority of what has been consumed) as a watery substance. The large intestine serves as the storage, dehydrative, decomposing and excreting organ. Most of the water is absorbed through the intestinal walls converting the waste into a semi-solid state on its way to excretion. Bacterial action is very great. In fact the feces are composed of a large and significant population of bacteria together with other indigestible substances and wastes, along with other contaminants excreted from the body through the intestinal walls. Fecal substances are conveyed through the large intestine in slow peristaltic waves, which create pressure and suction to activate the absorption of water through the walls. A HEALTHY organism will promptly excrete its wastes, which remain only a few hours in the large intestine. However, the average UNHEALTHY body, suffering from some degree of CONSTIPATION, may retain impacted feces in the large intestine for days, weeks and even months with great amounts of toxic substances being absorbed into the body with the absorbed water – A GREAT CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRESSIVE DISEASE AND DEGENERATION! A normal VEGAN meal, consisting of RAW FRUITS and/or RAW VEGETABLES, which are loaded with FIBER, will be completely digested in a fairly short period of time. While the unnatural Standard American Diet (SAD) meal, almost totally devoid of FIBER, consisting of FIBERLESS animal flesh, processed starches, processed beverages, sugars, table salt, etc., may remain in the intestines as long as 72 HOURS OR EVEN MORE and still not be properly digested, leading to gastro-intestinal distress. FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE Something that struck me as I was compiling the above information for this Health Tip was how accurately and concisely the Bible describes the incredible physical body we each possess: “FOR I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE:” (Psalm 139:14) GOD’S ORIGINAL PLAN FOR THE NOURISHMENT OF MAN Before we go any further with this article, let’s take a brief look at the diet God gave that first couple in the Garden of Eden: “And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food . .. . and the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” (Genesis 2:8, 9, & 15) “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb (vegetable) bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat (food).” (Genesis 1:29) I bring these verses to our attention to show very clearly that the diet God gave mankind in the beginning, was a diet loaded with plant FIBER, the very substance necessary to keep foods moving rapidly through the large intestine, and absolutely necessary to prevent CONSTIPATION. This Genesis 1:29 diet was also totally devoid of FIBERLESS substances, such as animal source foods, which are the CAUSE of CONSTIPATION! Almost every follower of the Atkins Diet suffers with CONSTIPATION problems! FIBER FIBER is the skeleton of the plant that allows it to take form and stand up against gravity. Every cell wall contained within the plant is made of FIBER. FIBER is what holds the cell contents. The cell contents (liquids) are what we know as food. The FIBER is indigestible, while the nutrients contained in the liquids surrounding the FIBER are what our body uses as food. The Standard American Diet (SAD), being consumed by the average person today, is almost totally devoid of FIBER, which is in sharp contrast to the FIBER rich plant source diet God gave mankind in Genesis 1:29. For instance, no FIBER can be found in anything of animal origin! Nor can any FIBER be found in refined sugar, or in refined grains. Nor is there any FIBER in oil, table salt, caffeine, soda pop, beer, wine, or even water. These FIBERLESS substances make up the bulk of the average persons daily diet of today, while the only source of FIBER (plant sourced foods), are seldom consumed. God designed the human physical body to be dependant on FIBER, as the means of propelling food rapidly through its lengthy digestive system, thus preventing putrefaction and CONSTIPATION! All the living plants, found in the garden into which God placed His human creations, were loaded with FIBER! These plant-sourced foods were also very high in water (60-90%) content! The foods found in the Genesis 1:29 diet, are the very foods that produce regular, non-odorous, soft bowel movements, while preventing CONSTIPATION. When you look at the plant-eating animals in the wild – monkey, rabbit, deer, horse, etc. - you will find that they experience no CONSTIPATION problems. But when you take a look at God’s human creation, who were also designed by God to be consumers of plant foods, you will find CONSTIPATION problems epidemic. In fact, the majority of people today experience CONSTIPATION problems to a greater or lesser degree, and have need for some kind of a laxative, in order to stimulate bowel movement. Why do vegan animals in the wild have no constipation problems, while humans, who were also designed by God to be vegan, experience monumental constipation problems? The answer to that question is very simple! The animals in the wild instinctively consume a 100% plant based diet, loaded with all that FIBER God designed their bodies to consume, while humans have been programmed by society to consume a diet that has drifted far from God’s original intent. STEPS TO A HEALTHY AND EFFICIENT DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Hopefully, after reading the above, we each have a better understanding of how our DIGESTIVE SYSTEM works, and as a result, have a desire to take better care of it. For this DIGESTIVE SYSTEM to function optimally, there are a number of steps we can take that will give us the ability to have almost complete control over the digestive process, so that it can function at optimal levels, and make CONSTIPATION problems a thing of the past: 1. EAT HIGH FIBER FOODS – FIBER can only be found in foods of plant origin! There is absolutely NO FIBER in anything of animal origin. And there is practically NO FIBER to be found in refined grains, refined sugar, or any beverage. It is the PLANT FIBER in the foods we eat that propels food through that almost 30-feet of digestive tract. When a vegan diet is consumed, a diet LOADED WITH PLANT FIBER, the food moves rapidly through the digestive tract – while on the practically FIBERLESS SAD, the food moves very sluggishly. A HIGH FIBER diet promotes digestive and colon health – while a diet practically devoid of FIBER, promotes poor digestion and poor colon health. 2. KEEP THE COLON CLEAN – FIBER acts like a broom in the colon, sweeping along and out of the body toxic debris, while a diet lacking in FIBER acts like a dirty old mop, leaving deposits of toxic debris behind. The 3-meals a day person, consuming the SAD, has as many as 8 UNDIGESTED MEALS, along with their toxic waste matter, in their colon at any one time. The average person, who consumes the SAD, would be shocked to learn that at any one time, they are carrying between 5 and 10 pounds of putrefied fecal matter, dead microorganisms, undigested food remnants, slime, fermentation byproducts, and other fowl material in their colon. These toxic wastes are absorbed into the blood stream and are deposited in tissues throughout the body. These toxins, as they accumulate in the tissues, interfere with normal cellular metabolism, and cause degenerative changes. When you see someone with a distended stomach, what you are seeing is more than just fat. Contributing to this distended stomach is all of that putrefied fecal matter (possibly 10 or more pounds of it) sitting in their large intestine. 3. KEEP PROBIOTIC LEVELS HIGH – Every person concerned with having a healthy digestive tract, must not only keep the colon CLEAN, but also make sure it is well supplied with beneficial bacteria (‘good guys’) to help keep the number of pathogenic microorganisms (“bad guys’) to a minimum. Sadly, most consumers of the SAD do not have adequate beneficial bacteria, but rather an overload of pathogenic microorganisms. For proof, just look at how many people suffer from acid stomach, heartburn, indigestion, bloating, gas, constipation and diarrhea. These problems are so common that well over 60-million Americans, consumers of the SAD, spend over one billion dollars purchasing laxatives and antacids each year. However, there is some GOOD NEWS for those who suffer – they can support and promote the health of their DIGESTIVE SYSTEM by changing their diet to include a high percentage of raw plant sourced foods; while eliminating animal source foods, junk foods, refined sugar, refined carbohydrates, medications and alcohol. In addition, and of tremendous importance, to improve and maintain normal digestive function we need sufficient probiotics to maintain an 85% population of friendly bacteria (‘good guys’) in the gut. Unfriendly bacteria (‘bad guys’) should never be above 15%. Yet the average SAD food eater has a ratio more like 85% UNFRIENDLY or more bacteria (‘bad guys’). To make sure we maintain this positive ratio of friendly to unfriendly bacteria in our guts, Rhonda and this editor regularly take several Hallelujah Acres Probiotics. 4. KEEP ENZYME LEVELS HIGH – All raw plant source foods contain ENZYMES, which assist in the digestive process. All cooked foods have had their enzymes destroyed by the heat of cooking. Whenever Olin, Rhonda, or this editor consumes a meal consisting of cooked food, we precede or follow that meal with several Hallelujah Acres Digestive Enzymes. These live enzymes assist the body in the digestion of the cooked foods consumed. 5. DRINK PLENTY OF PURIFIED WATER AND VEGETABLE JUICES – The body is comprised of approximately 70% liquid, which is constantly being lost, and must be replaced for the body to function properly. Liquid is especially important in the digestive process. Many people experience very hard and dry stools because of inadequate intake of liquids. Rhonda and I not only consume a diet high in raw plant source foods, which are loaded with liquid, as well as drinking several glasses of raw vegetable juices daily, but also keep a water bottle with us whenever we are away from home, and drink from it frequently. 6. FIBER CLEANSE – Fiber Cleanse is a Hallelujah Acres product, containing 28 herbs in a psyllium and flax seed base, designed to help cleanse the colon, restore optimal bowel function, and ensure timely elimination of toxins from the body – a must for achieving optimal bowel health. Use of this product is highly recommended for a person starting out on The Hallelujah Diet, but it is not advised that a person use this product long term, nor is it recommended for pregnant or lactating women. CLOSING THOUGHTS Almost everyone who has previously experienced CONSTIPATION problems prior to adopting The Hallelujah Diet, find that once they start consuming the HIGH FIBER and HIGH LIQUID content Hallelujah Diet, see their CONSTIPATION problems rapidly improve or disappear. Sadly, some have already done great damage to their colon through the long time use of laxatives, and may need long term help, which can often be found by using Fiber Cleanse for two to three months and then continuing with consistent use of additional fiber in the form of freshly ground flax seed (or Hallelujah Acres B/Flax/D), aggressive use of a good probiotic supplement, and an optimal intake of purified water. Isn’t it amazing, that even CONSTIPATION, is a matter of CHOICE!
