Guest guest
To reflect on the past year, fasting had its biggest impact on me. In 2005, I fasted from New Moon in June to the next New Moon which fell on the July 4th weekend of that year. The duration was 30 days and during that time I drunk mainly coconut water and sugarcane juice. I would usually add something to the sugarcane juice like lime juice and other fresh juices along with coconut water to dilute the sugarcane juice. Personally, I really enjoy doing extended fasts with coconut water because my energy stays high, it flushes my colon/kidneys/liver, and I just feel super fantastic! The cayenne/lemon/maple syrup water, which some people call the master cleanse, is no comparison (in my opinion). After about a week or two of just coconut water, I may also add other juices just for variety's sake, fresh squeezed OJ is the first option and if I can get sugarcane or raw apple cider then I do those. I mention this experience because this past year, I just chose not to fast this past summer for 2006 and I believe my body had other ideas. Last summer, 2006, we did a detox retreat in Jamaica for the summer solstice where all the participants did 3 days of fasting along with 2 days of all raw food before and after the 3 days of fasting. So I thought that this would be sufficient for me. The first day I got to Jamaica I ate about a dozen ackee (yum) and the next day I was nauseous, weak, and vomiting. Anyone that knows about ackee have heard stories about the possible danger in eating ackee when it is not ripe, basically you can die from ackee poisoning. So I thought I had ackee poisoning. I fasted that day on coconut water and felt fine later in the day. Two days later I ate ackee again for dinner, and yes, was vomiting with diarrhea, weak, and sick. This happened to be our last meal before everyone on the retreat was going into the 3 day fast. I felt fine by that afternoon and my strength returned. The fast went well and of course when we were ready to break the fast you would think that I was ready to pass on the ackee. NO WAY! I had ackee for the third time and didn't get sick, thank god. So reflecting on this and sharing this story, with the fast I did in '05 I felt that my body wanted/needed to do it again in '06 during the same time of the year. The ackee could have just been the trigger to force me to fast and allow those pork chops from childhood :-) to be eliminated from my body. I strongly feel that if I would have done another new moon to new moon fast during that time that I would not have had those vomiting episodes. So to make up for that I just recently came off 37 days of coconut water and fresh OJ. There were a number of things that inspired me to go into the fast but one of the things I'll mention here is someone told me about Sunshine Houston, who I would like to meet one day, fasts every year on pure water for 40 days. I hear that he is in his 70's and looks like he is in his early 40's. So that, along with other personal issues that I wanted to work out were my main inspirations. Lastly, I'll say that extended fasting is a beautiful thing, but I believe only if you have been doing all raw for at least a year or a few years. Mama Maisha is a wonderful spirit and I am sure she doesn't mind me sharing her story; she fasted for 30 days, lost 30 lbs., broke her fast and has since gained 50 lbs! I asked her what happened and she said since she broke her fast she had no control of her eating. She even went back to eating things she didn't eat before her fast. We have to respect our bodies in this healing transformation in relation to fasting, raw foods, and extended fasting. I think we have to look at like a 5-10 year process before undertaking a serious fast. When you psyche yourself up for an extended fast and your body is still comfortable with eating cooked starches, soy/tofu, etc, these foods will obviously be very appealing when the fast is over and it will be likely that you will choose those destructive foods over a green salad. Even for myself, in 2005 when I fasted and being on all raw foods for 4 years at that time, for the last 2 weeks of the fast I dreamed about eating EVERY NIGHT! I would wake up relieved to still be on my fast. This past fast that I just ended, I surprisingly didn't have any dreams even though I fasted longer. This year (2007) I am looking forward to taking a small step forward with my extended fast and the key word is 'small step'. I look at our bodies as being physical beasts constantly looking for pleasure that should and occasionally needs to be disciplined by the spirit within us. For anyone really looking to make fasting a part of their lives, I suggest reading Arnold Ehret's 'Rational Fasting' and 'Mucusless Diet Healing System' and/or getting a coach. Ehret was a master at working with people with fasting and approached it scientifically. Another book that inspired me was the ''Essene Gospel of Peace''. I hope for everyone a super healthy and abundant 2007!!! Guidance, Khepere
Guest guest
inspirational words for me, as today I've been fasting (well celery with salt at night) and I'm making juice for tomorrow (kale carrot, apple, celery). It is an ongoing journey process towards enlightenment. Blessings and thanks Khepere and family for being supportive and loving as we make our path to healing. one love pam
