Spirituality: An Act of Surrender I define spirituality as the paths that awaken us to our higher self a/k/a divine spirit, I AM presence, Christ Consciousness, or Buddha nature. In my life, music has been one of the paths that Spirit has used to awaken my higher self. Growing up as the daughter of a musician, gospel choir founder, and director of liturgical music in a Catholic Church, I experienced the power and presence of our Creator in the music of hymns and African American spirituals. One of my favorite spirituals is Hush! Hush! I enjoy listening to Kathleen Battle sing, Hu-SHH! Hu-SHH! Somebody’s callin’ mah name. Hu-uh-uh-uh SHHH! Somebody’s calling mah na-a-me. Hu-SHH! Hu-SHH! Somebody’s callin’ mah name. Oh Mah Lawd, oh mah Lawd what shall ah do? Throughout my life, I have heard a still small voice calling me to commit to a deeper way of living in this world. For me that voice is God’s divine guidance and wisdom. I have to be honest and admit that I have not always listened to and/or followed divine guidance and wisdom. A lot of times, I think my way is the best path to take. When I follow my self-determined path, I always wind up feeling separated from my higher self. This state of being creates endless struggles. Several years ago, I grew tired of the struggles and began searching for ways to transform my state of being a/k/a consciousness. I didn’t know where to begin, but I knew that our Creator would guide me. So I said a prayer of surrender and opened myself to divine guidance and wisdom. My prayer was simple: Dear God, I surrender my will and ego to Your Divine Spirit. I open myself to the divine spirit within myself, everyone, and everything in the universe. AMEN. Yoga, meditation, reiki healing touch, expressive arts, journaling, running, Yoruba and other African religions, Native American sacred practices, Islam, New Thought Christianity (Silent Unity and Science of Mind), Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism were paths that I was led to. I come back to these paths whenever I get lost and forget who I am truly am… Divine Being… Divine Love… Divine Peace… Divine Energy… Divine Truth… This month I encourage you to take a deep breath and surrender to the path(s) Spirit is

calling you to honor and explore. Each moment of your day, let go of your will and make room for divine will. Give yourself back to yourself by following divine guidance and wisdom. Know that the sacred path(s) you are called to travel will lead to your true home … the present moment … the place that allows you to awaken your higher self.
