Reflection: September 11th - My Universal Truth LessonThe terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, created two opportunities for those of us living on Mother Earth: 1) to love each other despite our differences or 2) to hurt each other because of our differences in culture, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, class, and sexual orientation. Which opportunity did you choose? And which

opportunity will you continue to choose as you live your life? I chose love and continue to choose it as I live my life because it is the great universal truth that binds us to each other as one. All sacred traditions and practices reflect this truth. Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th century Benedictine Abbess, captured this truth when she wrote, “God has arranged all things in the world in consideration of everything else … Everything that is in the heavens, on the earth, and under the earth, is penetrated with connectedness, is penetrated with relatedness.” She knew then what we should know now that we are one … inseparably intertwined and linked

to each other. Eleven days after the terrorist attacks, Alice Walker spoke before the Midwives of North America in Albuquerque , New Mexico (See sent by earth, a message from the Grandmother Spirit by Alice Walker, Open Media Pamphlet Series). In her speech, she asked the audience “to stand and turn to the person on either side.” Alice invited them to take each other’s hand, look each other in their eyes and say: “I welcome you here.” Her invitation offered the members of the audience an opportunity to salute their neighbor’s divinity and honor their connection to one another. I am certain that everyone who accepted Alice ’s invitation experienced the beauty of humanity that occurs when we cross boundaries and embrace each other as we are. When we embrace each other as we are, the individual patches of our lives form a great quilt masterpiece … a bond … a collective … a manifestation of humanity’s oneness.
