Has anyone belonged to a CSA? This is a Community Supported

Agriculture where you buy shares from a local farm and they give you

produce every week during the growing season. The cost is generally

$300-500 with oppurtunities to reduce share cost in exchange for

volunteering on the farm. I am looking at purchasing at one of two

local organic farms if anyone has joined a CSA a or have any useful

information please let me know.

I've been a member of two CSAs.

- Cromwell Valley Farm CSA

- Spoutwood Farm CSA

The last few years Spoutwood has had a pickup close to my house, so I went

with them. The last pickup was about a month ago. I miss that just-picked

flavor!

I didn't volunteer this year at the farm: I paid the extra amount, knowing

my schedule.

I definitely recommend joining a CSA.

We belong to a very lovely CSA. It is called House in the Woods Farm, located in Adamstown, MD (exit 26 off of 270, in the Sugarloaf area). Ilene and Phil Freedman are the owners/farmers. They are certified organic and grow mostly heirloom varieties. They are very commited to sustainable farming practices. They grow a pretty wide selection of veggies, herbs and flowers. They don't have tree fruits or berries, but frequently sell other farm's fruit in season (always organic) A full share, I seem to recall, is about $425, with the option of a half share where you pick up every other week as opposed to every week for a full share. They have a work committment of 12 hours a season. They are totally kid friendly, as they have 2 little boys themselves, if that is an issue for you. They also have concerts on their farm which are a lot of fun. I wholeheartedly recommend them without hestitation! Blessings, Elisetriciegirl
