Guest guest
Below is a link to an article about the use of the pesticide methyl bromide on crops such as -- but not limted to -- Florida tomatoes, California strawberries, Georgia peppers and North Carolina Christmas trees. The short term effects of this pesticide are 1. convulsions 2. comas 3. neuromuscular and cognitive problems 4. death Those at risk, in particular, are farm workers handling the pesticide, animals who wander into the fields, and neighbors/ schools within close vicinity of a farm which uses the pesticide. This pesticide is odorless and colorless and seeps into the air where it is carried for miles. It is injected into the soil before planting and is said to be " extremely efficient in killing plant parasites and weeds and eradicating plant diseases. " It apparently has killed many animals, too, as farm workers have noted seeing dogs, birds and deer laying lifeless in the fields when they arrive to remove the plastic sheeting covering the soil. (The plastic sheeting is used to keep the chemical from seeping into the air.) No studies are available on the long-term effects of those who consume produce fumigated with the pesticide.
