Guest guest
Dear _____________ (personalize) Farm Sanctuary’s recent investigation of a livestock auction reveals a downed cow left to suffer, too sick or injured to even stand. Like thousands of downer animals each year, she was viewed as merely a commodity, rather than an animal in pain and in need of care. For two decades, Farm Sanctuary has been fighting to expose and stop the cruelty of dealing in downed animals. Now, as evidence steadily mounts showing the link between mad cow disease and downed animals, we are positioned like never before to end this horrendous industry abuse once and for all … but we need your support. Despite the second case of mad cow disease confirmed in the U.S. in a downed cow, USDA Secretary Mike Johanns inexplicably announced that downed cattle may once again be allowed into the human food supply. Farm Sanctuary is calling for a permanent ban on downed cattle, and ALL downed animals, including pigs, sheep and other livestock. We have petitioned the USDA, and are supporting passage of the Downed Animal Protection Act in U.S. Congress. We now need the help of Farm Sanctuary members to help expose this hidden abuse through the mainstream media. With your donation today, we can fund a full page advertisement in the New York Times and the Washington Times to reach the public and members of Congress in Washington D.C. at this critical juncture. We’re counting on Farm Sanctuary members to make this timely action possible. When the first case of mad cow disease was discovered in December 2003, Farm Sanctuary drew on its years of research and investigations and launched a massive media campaign to expose the documented link to downed animals. Millions of Americans listened in horror, learning about the cruel downed animal trade for the first time. The public was further shocked and appalled to learn that these downed animals were being used for human food. The USDA responded at that time with a temporary ban – but that ban is now in jeopardy and we must take action immediately. Uncovering and fighting downer abuse has been a long, hard struggle against a powerful industry. But we’ve never given up, and we can’t give up now. A downed pig is left to suffer because she still has market value and can be sold for slaughter. Our public awareness campaigns are crucial to our ability to pass laws and policies to ban this cruel practice. Please help us end the downed animal trade with a gift to the NO DOWNERS CAMPAIGN today. For the animals, Gene BaustonPresident P.S. In addition to sending your gift today, please write to your representatives and senators to encourage them to support the Downed Animal Protection Act. With every member taking action, we can create change for downed animals. Farm Sanctuary is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to ending farm animal abuse through direct rescue and protection campaigns.
