Special Hurricane Relief MessageSeptember 8, 2005 | Refer a Friend As I have indicated in the daily Update, thousands of evacuees from New Orleans are now residing in private homes and churches scattered throughout the Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi area. The Administration has prepared debit cards in the amount of $2,000 for distribution to the families displaced by the hurricane. To receive the cards displaced citizens must be registered with FEMA. If you are working with displaced families from New Orleans, or other areas affected by the hurricane, please make sure that they are registered with FEMA. FEMA is registering people in Red Cross and other public shelters but those in private homes and churches must register on their own. Displaced people can register on-line at www.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362.If you are operating a shelter with 500 people or more, please let us know by contacting us at 1-800-225-4008 so that we can put you in contact with the Faith-Based Office in the White House. These monies are intended to help families take the next step in recovering from their losses in Hurricane Katrina. To those not affected by the hurricane:Most of the churches that are providing relief to the thousands of displaced citizens have not received any governmental assistance. If you would like to support local churches in meeting the needs of these hurting families, please visit www.prccompassion.org or call 1-888-966- 6600.
