Guest guest Posted September 8, 2005 Report Share Posted September 8, 2005 It's always nice to get some good news in the midst of tragedy :-) Nancy The Silver Lining Many of the wedding guests did not have to travel far to attend Leonard and Annette's wedding Tuesday night; they simply walked from the gymnasium to the sanctuary at my home church of Greenwell Springs Baptist. The couple, who have children and had been living together in New Orleans, told Dr. Dennis Terry that since being at the shelter and being a part of the Sunday services, they wanted to make things right in their lives and one of those steps was to get married. There were no silver wedding bells on the impromptu wedding cake, but it does provide some silver lining to the tragedy that my home state is facing. This was the first African-American couple ever married in our church in its over 50 year history. The vast majority of displaced residents of New Orleans who are staying in the church shelters are African-Americans being helped by churches in mostly white communities with resources, not from the government, because they've refused to help, but from church people across the nation. In the midst of this tragic event, I have hope that our state and nation will forever be changed for the better by the racial reconciliation that is happening through the thousands of acts of compassion that we are witnessing.
