Guest guest
From Ayanna: Greetings all, I was down at the DC Armory today and they were turning people away because the Evacuee's will not be arriving in town until tomorrow. Please DO NOT bring clothing or other items to the Armory. This is a Red Cross operation and they will be issuing vouchers to these survivors so that they can purchase new clothing. Donate Clothing, food, household items: - The Louisiana Network will be accepting these donations as well as monetary donations at the following locations: Saturday, September 10th from 1pm to 5pm Alonzo Brown 1729 Stanton Terrace, SE Washington, DC 20020 301.996.8823 Saturday, September 17th from 1pm to 5pm Bridget Avery 3418 Chatham Road Adelphi, MD (University & Adelphi intersection) 301.422.8383 September 24th from 12pm to 5pm Johanna Reed 753 Farway Court Bowie, MD (Campus Way & Central Ave.) 301.324.5514 Saturday, October 1st from 12pm to 5pm Jeremy Broussard 8254 Quill Point Drive Bowie, MD 20720 301.464.4296 Saturday, October 15th from 1pm to 5pm Elena Temple 1310 I Street, NE Washington, DC 20002 202.397.2642 Sorting and Distributing: The Louisiana Network will need help with sorting and possibly distribution over the coming weeks. Please contact Colette at cbattle to have your name added to the volunteer list. Additional ways you can get involved: Welcome Committee: I am organizing a meet and greet committee of Sister Mama’s who are interested in showing some love to the women and children as they arrive, and to help them get acclimated to the services within the armory. Send an email to me at ayanna940 and I will add your name and phone number to the list. I will contact you directly once we have clearance to show up at the Armory. Service Providers: Counselors, social workers, physicians, breast-feeding peer counselors, childcare providers, transportation persons (anyone with car and willing to transport folk), massage therapist, hair stylists/barbers, dentist, etc... Please go on down to the Armory and get your name on the service provider list. The Red Cross has a database and will be calling upon you to provide these services. Pair-up with a Family: As the reality of the disaster sets in and the emotional-psychological and social ramifications of this disaster set in, families will need the support of friendly faces who will help take their minds off the their problems (but for a moment). If you are interested in assisting with coordinating activities such as going to the movies, skating, taking families on tours of DC, having a family over for Sunday dinner, meals on wheels, attending church, mosque or temple, etc.., and would like to help organize and participate in such an effort, please contact me at ayanna940. We’ll need to meet ASAP to work out the details. One love, Ayanna
