For the past several months, I've been using an SW-3000, Smith & Wesson SWAT

knife which I bought from discountknivesonline.com for about $34. This is the

same knife sold by David Wolfe, Paul Nison and Rhio on their respective

websites, often called a " coconut knife, " but for several dollars less. It opens

young coconuts much more easily than a corkscrew, hammer or other methods

suggested thus far on this list.

 

The method is simple. Perforate the edge of the coconut's top with the tip of

the blade on a 45-degree angle (diagonal), around the periphery in a circle.

Then insert the tip into several (12-16) strategic points of the perforation and

gently maneuver the blade to and fro till you feel it puncturing the shell where

it touches the internal water. When you've made enough punctures around the

periphery, you can easily remove the top. Be sure not to remove the blade too

fast, lest you spill substantial water outside the coconut and allow it to be

wasted. I usually find about 1.5 cups of water inside. Then I pour the water

into a 4-cup measuring cup and usually save it for a smoothie. More on that

later.

The little hatchett shaped knife opens the coconut in about 5-10 seconds even my 16 yr old son and Josh's mom have no problem wiyh this method. After the water is out one swipe in the middle splits it in half. I usually use the jelly every few days or so and it takes about a minute or two to open up 5-6 without rushing.
