Guest guest
i eat three coconuts 1. the old ones in the stores still have good water the coconut meat itself is really stale though - nuff said 2. sprouted 3. spoon meat sprouted coconuts you have to pull them out of the ground if there are plenty around then you are just pruning so they will all be happier the sprouted ones are spoungy and sweet there is no water inside, it is all filled with sponge absolutely the best young coconuts at very young, they are filled with water and have no meat the first white solid to gel is called spoon meat because you can scoop it out with a spoon the layer of spoon meat get thicker as it grows i like a medium layer of spoon meat enough to eat and enjoy but still thin enough to get out with a spoon i like the spoon meat coconuts from hawaii better than thailand to open a young coconut: the best way to do it is to pay a local to use his machette but if you were able to buy it in a city, you're on your own if you were lucky, the top of the coconut was partially shaved you only need to open the top, pour out the water, and scoop the meat to open the top: continue to shave the skin from the shell (with a knife) when the top is clean, you will notice two indentations near the top they are soft spots that a titianium pick will easily penetrate after making two holes, pour out the water next, to get out the meat: take the top off some of the shells are soft enough so that you can saw it with a knife some are so hard i just swing with a mallet and crack the top (that is one reason for leaving the skin on the bottom, it won't crack) the idea is to just take off the top two inches if you do it right with a machette or saw properly you can use the top as a spoon love jrellis
Guest guest
hi all!! about those coconuts... i have heard before , or read, that the journey from thailand or wherever overseas they come fromis such a long journey that they must be treated with this solution. this was from a company (raw food) but i don't remember--that was promoting the idea to FLY the coconuts over as opposed to having themshipped by sea. that major prob with this was that it jumped the price up to 6 dollars EACH. does anyone else have a take on this subject , or any suggestions as to what one would do if these coconuts wer a staple in their diet(as they are " hailed " in the raw food world. peace, Aisha
Guest guest
I have been purchasing the green coconuts from Shoppers Food Warehouse. They cost $1.95 each. I use a corkscrew in the soft eye to make a hole. Sometimes I have to do this several times before I can drain the water. If the coconut is especially large, an additional long tool is needed to finish the job. I use a knife sharpener that is long and cylindrical with a blunt end and just poke it on through to the watery interior. I find this fairly easy to do. I drain the water into a bowl, strain it through a nutmilk bag, then drink it. These coconuts have little if any meat, so I don't have to worry about injuring myself while trying to chop them open with a sledgehammer. I just drink the water, or use it in smoothies, then throw away the husk. I have gotten anywhere from 6 to 20 ounces of water per coconut. I think the average is about 10-12 ounces.
