Guest guest
In DC, you can find cases of young coconuts, both the green and white ones, at the wholesale market near Florida Avenue and New York Avenue. The place I buy them is called Sam Wang's, 300 Morse St NE #A, Washington, DC; phone: (202) 544-5162. See maps. for directions, since this place is tucked back in a warehouse district. Metro directions: Take the Metro to the new New York Avenue station, go to 4th Street, cross Florida Avenue, and turn left at the first intersection. Sam Wang's is straight ahead. Driving directions: From the intersection of New York and Florida avenues (Northeast), take Florida Avenue under the underpass for the train tracks and continue to the second light. Turn left on 4th Street, drive one block and turn left. Sam Wang's is straight ahead. You can get cases of green coconuts (which are older than the Thai coconuts), maybe 15 in a box, and cases of nine white young (Thai) coconuts for around $9 now. The price seems to vary from day to day. When you walk in the door, go to the counter to the right and place your order, pay, and then take your slip outside to the guy filling orders. They'll bring it out from the back, and if you need help, take it to your vehicle. Parking is a trip, as is getting in and out of the parking lot. I'd avoid Saturday mornings from 9-12. Also inside the warehouse is a chiller room full of produce from around the world, which is pretty interesting. It's targeted to consumers, and the prices are really reasonable. The lines can get long, and there are no prices marked on anything. Nothing is labelled organic. Steve
