food co-ops and CSAs

Hi Jeritta!

 

I belong to both a food co-op and a CSA. Also am part of a little buying

club thing out of VA that sells organic bulk things like nuts and amish

products. The food co-op that I go to is the Common Market in Frederick.

The CSA I belong to is called House in the Woods. You can read about

them at http://www.houseinthewoods.com - I tried the Spiritual Food for

the Millenium CSA in Bethesda and have also purchased a fruit share from

Bull Run Farm which is out of VA but delivers to various parts of the DC

metro area. They also do regualar veggies shares and flower shares as well.

 

The CSAs actually are the best deal for me - the only thing is to keep

to what they give you each week and not to supplement things. For

example, some weeks I get a lot of tomatoes and maybe some cucumbers

plus a bunch of other stuff. But maybe I won't get onions that week - so

I just eat what is given to me and not make special recipes that would

require me going to the store for additional stuff. Using the CSAs

really is a wonderful way to learn about what is seasonal to your area -

it supports the farmer directly with no middle man and if you get to

work on the farm as part of your share, well that is truly an awesome

experience. And just a little note about tomatoes: the tomatoes that you

can get from the CSAs is worth the cost of the share, in my humble

opinion. The selection is not anything that you'll find in stores and

they are picked when ripe, not when green (so that they will survive the

transit to the store.) I've seen heirloom tomatoes at Whole Foods at

over $4.00/lb and they still didn't come close to the ripeness that I

get at my CSA. I can't tell you enough about how delicious these

tomatoes are. We get 15 variety of tomatoes and I've gotten so spoiled

that I can't bear to buy tomatoes in the stores anymore. The other thing

is that the produce lasts MUCH longer than when you buy in the store.

You can't get any fresher unless you have your own garden.

 

So that's my two cents! :-)
