Greetings Members:

This information is provided for you to pass on to close friends and

family who are consuming the SAD. I realized that we are not to

attempt to force anything on anyone so this only serves as

information in light of the recent headlining news of " Mad Cow

Disease " .

U.S. MISLEADS CONSUMERS ON BEEF SAFETY

In news conferences held to control damage by Mad Cow disease to the

$175 billion U.S. beef industry, Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman

and USDA Chief Veterinarian W. Ron DeHaven grossly misled U.S.

consumers about beef safety.

Here are some important points the two USDA officials failed to make:

a.. The government had no basis for waiting this long to confirm the

presence of Mad Cow disease in the U.S. USDA is testing only 20,000

of the 40 million cows slaughtered annually (1 in 2,000) and has

refused to release earlier testing data. Europe and Japan found more

cases sooner because they test nearly every animal slaughtered.

b.. The government has no basis for claiming that the 1997 FDA ban on

feeding cow slaughterhouse remains to other cows, a common

transmission path, prevents spread of the disease. A 2000 GAO survey

found 28% of feed plants out of compliance. The afflicted cow was

born after the ban.

c.. The government has no basis for claiming that Americans do not

consume meat products containing spinal column and brain tissue,

traditional carriers of the disease. During slaughter, muscle tissues

are routinely sprayed with bits of these tissues. T-bone steaks,

hamburgers, hot dogs, and beef fillings and toppings contain skeletal

fragments, including the spinal column. Beef stock, extract,

flavoring are made by boiling skeletal remains.

d.. The government has no basis for claiming no confirmed cases of

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), the deadly human form of the disease,

because it doesn't examine the brain tissues of the thousands of

people who die each year of various forms of dementia. Contracted by

consuming infected beef CJD, killed 153 people in Europe.

e.. The government has no business claiming that CJD is transmitted

solely through consumption of infected beef. Other animals raised for

food are capable of carrying, contracting and, presumably,

transmitting the disease, but they don't get to live long enough to

manifest symptoms.

All this raises a number of intriguing questions which will be

answered by our experts at the Mad Cow Crisis Hotline:

Michael Greger, MD - leading expert and speaker on the Mad Cow crisis

Howard Lyman - former cattle rancher, author, speaker on the Mad Cow

crisis

John Stauber - author and leading expert on the Mad Cow crisis

Alex Hershaft, PhD - National Chair of the Great American Meatout

interview.

This March will mark the 19th annual observance of the Great American

Meatout, world's greatest grassroots diet education campaign. Caring

people in a thousand communities in all 50 states and 20 other

countries will welcome the first day of spring by asking their

friends and neighbors to " kick the meat habit and explore a

wholesome, nonviolent diet of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. "

Events range from a Congressional Receptio and colorful 'lifestivals'

to street theater, public dinners, cooking demos, and information

tables ('steakouts').
