Risk of Colorectal Cancer with a vegetarian Diet Assessed.

My wife takes the " Which Health " journal. One of the reports was the

results of the study by the Universities of Oxford and Warwick in the UK and in

the university of Otago in Dunedin in New Zealand. They were looking at

colorectal Cancer and dietary factors over a period of 17 years. There were

nearly 11,000 men & women. 42% were Vegetarian. All were recruited during

1980 and 1984. During the 17 year period 95 cases of colorectal Cancer were

found, 39 in vegetarians, 56 in the non vegetarians, this difference was not

significant.

The only dietary factor associated with a SIGNIFICANTLY reduced risk was

seen in participants with the highest consumption of FRESH OR DRIED FRUIT.

Those eating a high number of slices of WHITE BREAD more than doubled the

risk.

Also current and PAST smokers had an increased risk of colorectal cancer

compared with never smokers.

Their main conclusion was that fresh or dried FRUIT consumption reduces

colorectal cancer risk and smoking doubles it.
